« Perfect! I could not have asked for a better tutor than Chloe, from beginning to end she’s been literally amazing in helping me on my personal statement for the top universities. Not only was she helping me with a personal statement on a course completely different to her subject expertise, she went out of her own way to research further on how to best make my application stronger. I look forward to working with her again for my admissions test for Oxford University, and I highly recommend Chloe to anybody who’s looking for someone who provides very thorough and detailed feedback on any piece of written work. »

Oxford master's graduate offering online English literature and language tutoring from GCSE-University level

Methodology

I am passionate about English literature and language and love to encourage my students to find similar enjoyment and inspiration in the texts they read. The sessions will focus around what that particular student needs or feels they need help with, making sure that this is discussed before each lesson to maximise the time spent working on it. At the end of each session it is important to review, consolidate, and prepare for the next.

Generally, I combine nailing the particulars of the exam board or faculty specifications with tips and tricks learnt from my own life-long experiences of analysing texts and essay writing with great success. Ultimately, I believe that students should leave my sessions able to not just pass the exam or essay they are working towards but with the confidence, ability, skill-set, and drive to approach literature at any level and thrive.

With two degrees from Russell Group universities, I can also help with undergraduate/masters applications, Oxbridge entrance, personal statements, and offer general essay-writing advice and proof-reading services.

I offer my first hour for free. This generally functions as a consultation and we'll spend the time getting to know each other, understanding what you or your child needs, and developing a plan of action.

Ambassador

One of our best tutors! High-quality profile, qualifications verified and response guaranteed. Chloe will plan your first lesson with care.

Experience

I hold Ambassador status with SuperProf meaning that the platform considers me one of its best and most reliable tutors.

I'm a Queen Mary, University of London and University of Oxford graduate. I hold bachelor's and master's degrees in English literature with First Class Honours and Distinction. I can help with GCSE, A-Level, undergraduate and master's level English literature and language. I specialise in medieval literature and so I'm aware and well-equipped to teach texts from the earliest Old English to modernist and contemporary writing.

I have experience proofreading and marking the work of my colleagues and peers over the years and I am well-acquainted with the mechanics and specifications of English literature syllabi at all levels.

Judging Associate for Short Stories - June 2020-August 2020
King Lear Prizes
Role: During my time as a master’s student in English at Oxford, I volunteered to help judge the short story entries for King Lear Prizes – a campaign and competition set up by Andrew Browning to encourage those aged 60 and above to get involved with the arts in lockdown during the Coronavirus pandemic. The judging involved reading and grading hundreds of short stories in different categories, a role which I both enjoyed and was good at following years of proofreading and offering feedback on my colleagues’ essays and theses over my two degrees.

I would recommend Chloe to anyone who is looking to truly excel at English Literature at any level. I am a Masters in Physics graduate from Imperial College London who has known Chloe since completing our GCSEs together. She is an extremely gifted writer with a flare for teaching. Her excellent academic history confirms that she knows how to consistently succeed at the highest standard from GCSE all the way through to a Master's at Oxford. But most importantly she has an empathetic and friendly personality that makes it easy for her to build rapport with students and pass on her knowledge in a manner that is tailored to each student's needs.

I met Chloe in 2014, in our English Language and English Literature A level classes. Throughout the entirety of the two years we spent doing our A levels, Chloe was known for helping other students within lessons and very often any work produced by Chloe was given to others by our tutors as A grade example work.
As university students, Chloe has proof read my work alongside other university students, as her opinion and input is vastly trusted.
When it comes to her academia, Chloe is a very organised person who puts in 100% effort. With that, when she tutors others, I’m sure the same level of organisation and effort will be mirrored making her an exceptional tutor.

I'm not sure there are words to explain Chloe's impact on my education. Chloe and I attended university together from 2016-19 and I genuinely believe that I achieved a 2:1 grade in English due to Chloe. Were it not for her excellent tutelage, I would've found it hard to find my academic path within university. Chloe effortlessly helped me to understand elements on the degree that I was not able to discern from my professors and supervisors. She was always calm and collected when helping me - and often took hours out of her week to run me through any upcoming assignments or exams that were due. I couldn't think of a better person to help me/my son or daughter with anything within the field of study of English. I'm sure I am not the only person who could vouch for her so effusively too.

I have known Chloe since our undergraduate studies at Queen Mary and with absolute confidence, I can say that she is immensely intelligent, diligent, accomplished, and affable. She is remarkably dedicated, thorough, dutiful, coherent, passionate, and clear in her approach, and most importantly, incredibly supportive. With ease, efficiency, eloquence, and encouragement, Chloe will credibly explain the ins and outs of English literature and language, from jargon to theory. She will also reliably help you navigate through the challenges of academic work, whether analysing text, essay writing, or exam preparation. She will endow you with the valuable knowledge and experiences she has gained during her successful studies, and with a fantastic attitude, she will guide you in developing the necessary skills, confidence, and motivation to achieve outstanding results in your own studies. I highly recommend Chloe to tutees, especially if you are looking for a positive and rewarding learning environment from an empathetic and exceptionally qualified tutor.

I was one of Chloe's peers in the MSt 650-1550 English cohort for 2019-2020, and in the relatively short time that I have known her, I have benefitted significantly from her guidance. Whether it be essay advice or helping to explain and simplify complex topics, I could always rely on her to offer answers in a patient and understanding manner. Her knowledge in our subject area is impeccable and I found her expression of this especially compelling in our class presentations- hence why she was my "go-to" for any questions about our course! I envy anyone who gets Chloe as their tutor- if her impressive skills of written and verbal expression were not enough, her passion and drive for the subject cements her suitability for tutoring. Her motivation inspired me when my own was lacking and I think that this is an invaluable quality for a tutoring role catered to build the confidence of students.

Interview with Chloe

QUESTION 01 | 08
When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
Chloe — My passion for English literature, English language, and learning began at an early age during my school years. It flourished and was solidified during my undergraduate degree in English at Queen Mary, University of London where I also decided that I wanted to pursue a career in academia and teach literature at university level. After completing my master's in English at Oxford, I knew I wanted to spend my gap year before my PhD giving tutoring a go to develop some teaching experience, and I am loving it!
QUESTION 02 | 08
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
Chloe — I teach English literature and language from GCSE to undergraduate level. I teach all set texts on GCSE and A-Level syllabi and am always excited to read and teach books I myself haven't read before. I particularly enjoy teaching my older students as university-level teaching is what I am aiming for in my career, however I also love seeing the progress of my GCSE students, especially when they begin to find new and exciting readings in over-studied texts, such as Shakespeare. I'm less keen on GCSE-level poetry, as I feel it is taught rather mechanically in schools which inhibits creativity and personal interpretation.
QUESTION 03 | 08
Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
Chloe — There have been three main English teachers in my life who have guided me to where I am today. I remember my earliest high school English teacher telling me that my writing and ideas were useless. We then had a new, young, and vibrant teacher later in the year who encouraged and believed in me - she told me that my work was about two levels above where I should have been working at. I struggled again with my two GCSE teachers, who often squabbled amongst themselves, but my A-Level English literature teacher was the real turning point. She inspired me to become an English teacher myself: her technique, passion, and belief in me had a lasting effect. More recently, one of my university professors was absolutely instrumental in my decisions to specialise in medieval literature, want to teach at university level, and apply (and get in!) to Oxford for a master's degree.
QUESTION 04 | 08
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
Chloe — I think tutoring is all about balance - the balance between listening and educating; praising and outlining areas for improvement; and combining the more 'boring' tasks of going through exam board specifications and objectives with fun activities to get students thinking critically and excitedly about books and stories. Each student at every age has something wonderful and nuanced to say about the subject if only you are willing to listen.
QUESTION 05 | 08
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school. I remember in the days before our A-Level English literature exam, I had a 'premonition' about what the question would be in the exam paper. The whole class got excited and we all set to work--our teacher included--with banana bread, water, and highlighters ready to analyse that particular theme in the texts. Of course, the premonition was totally wrong and we got asked something unrelated in the exam, but it was great fun and the banana bread was nice.

Of course, the premonition was totally wrong and we got asked something unrelated in the exam, but it was great fun and the banana bread was nice.
QUESTION 06 | 08
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?
Chloe — There are so many challenges in English studies at the higher level I am now working at: coming up with novel and practical research; getting articles and proposals accepted by journals; battling the academic job market, etc... But I would say the main challenge I have faced throughout and still face now is believing in myself and my own ideas and abilities. If you have an idea--however wacky--pursue it! Write about it, argue it well, and don't be afraid to take fresh stances on overstudied texts.
QUESTION 07 | 08
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
Chloe — I specialise in medieval literature - specifically the literatures, languages and cultures of high medieval England and France, 1066-1300. I love to read and write about history and fiction, and my research often discusses the genres of historia and fabula, chronicle and romance in the Middle Ages. I also have a passion for Arthurian literature, myth and legend, and outside of my academic research I love to read fantasy novels.
QUESTION 08 | 08
What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?
Chloe — I am a highly-qualified, dedicated, and passionate individual who loves literature and thrives in an environment where I can teach others and encourage them to get excited about the subject too, even if they previously weren't. I love the variety of the job and the fact that I could be teaching GCSE Macbeth in one hour and guiding an undergraduate through their final-year thesis in the next. Essentially, I love to feel I have helped someone, taught them something valuable, or reinvigorated their motivation and passion for learning if it was wavering
