About the lesson
**A comprehensive online tuition service can also be provided in addition to face-to-face tuition – please see full details below**
Friendly, approachable and experienced Oxford educated teacher offering GCSE/A level tuition in Science and Mathematics. At present, I am teaching Chemistry and GCSE Science at Highgate School, North London.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I offer tuition in Chemistry up to AS/A2 level, Maths and Science up to GCSE. Tuition is also available for the BMAT and GAMSAT entrance exams required for certain medical schools in the UK, so i can assist with the preparation for these difficult, niche tests. I have helped numerous students of school age as well as mature students go on to medical school over the past decade. Additionally, I offer specialist coaching and mock interview practice for those applying to medical school and Oxbridge, including the preparation of a Personal Statement for the UCAS form (this being one of my designated roles at Highgate).
Lastly, tuition is provided for those sitting numeracy and literacy exams required for entrance to the Armed Forces or those studying for degrees that incorporate Chemistry modules e.g. business with Chemistry, foundation courses etc.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
Masters in Chemistry (MChem, Hons) from Oxford University (Worcester College 2001 - 2005).
QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) postgraduate programme, Buckingham University.
- How much do you charge?
Rates: GCSE and A level: £60 per hour.
Undergraduate, BMAT and GAMSAT: £60 per hour.
Please see my website for further details.
- Where do you teach?
I cover Central London and Greater London, but do work further afield - please get in touch. What is more, I work with a number of international students around the world e.g. China and Hong Kong, via online tuition.
Tuition usually takes place at the client's home, although I am flexible in regard to the time and location of the lessons.
Full online tuition services are provided utilising whatever platform you wish – whether it be Zoom, Skype or Microsoft Teams. Online lessons are streamed in full HD using professional audio, visual and lighting equipment (not a laptop webcam and inbuilt microphone), ensuring your experience is as close as possible to in-person tuition. Furthermore, I utilise a traditional whiteboard, so you can take notes during the lesson and we can discuss problems in real-time. Lastly, practice questions, mark schemes and notes can be sent over instantly during the lesson.
I have an extensive list of references from previously satisfied clients for your perusal - please get in touch and see my personal website for more information.
- When are you available?
Daytime, evenings and weekends for face-to-face tuition, depending on my school timetable. Online tuition can take place at the tutee's convenience.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
Usually between 12 - 18 years old, although I do teach a number of mature learners studying part time for engineering and science degrees, or applying to medical school.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
GCSE, A level, BMAT and GAMSAT.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
With over a decade's worth of tuition experience, extensive knowledge of all the examination boards and a teaching position at an elite, independent co-educational school, I believe I am well placed to help you with your tuition needs. My aim is to get the very best out of tutees using a variety of teaching methods with a strong emphasis on exam technique. I have helped tutees of all ages and abilities on a one-to-one basis as well as within small groups. I am flexible and adaptable in my approach to teaching, and endeavour to create a learning environment in which the tutee can thrive. Questions from tutees are encouraged as much as possible; I believe this is absolutely essential if a solid understanding of a topic is to be achieved. Subjects are taught according to exact syllabus requirements. Knowledge is tested through the setting of regular homework and past paper questions. Marking and feedback to tutees is prompt.

Chris provided tuition to my daughter who was undertaking her AS level in Chemistry. Chris was fantastic and I recommend him without any reservation. He is patient, supportive and very knowledgeable. He helped my daughter more fully understand her subject and improved her confidence considerably
My daughter was due to take her GCSE Maths in Autumn 2010 and I was becoming increasingly concerned about her lack of confidence in the subject. I contacted Chris following several recommendations from work colleagues and it was one of the best things I ever did. Over the very short period of barely 8 weeks, he worked with my daughter steadily building her confidence with tremendous patience and individually tailored work. She achieved a Grade A in higher tier GCSE (school expected a grade B).
After sitting numerous A-Level Chemistry exams and only achieving E grades, I called Chris for one to one tuition. His easy-going attitude and wealth of knowledge helped me gain a completely new insight into the subject. What helped me most, is Chris' suggestion of a new revision technique which I followed religiously. After picking up my A-level results and discovering I'd achieved grade A in Chemistry overall, I have nothing but praise for Chris and I will be forever grateful for all his help.
Chris tutored my son Danny during his A level years. Chris was completely reliable, knew the syllabus and was an excellent teacher. Danny both liked him very much and respected him. I am most grateful to Chris for his commitment to us.
My daughter was struggling in Maths GCSE obtaining D's and E's. After just 12 lessons with Chris she was a B grade student and after a further 6 lessons was achieving A grade, an amazing turn around at a subject that was not liked. Chris was professional and courteous at all times and tailored my daughter's lessons to her requirements. Both myself, and my daughter, thank him wholeheartedly for his valued assistance and I would definitely contact him again should the need arise.
Chris' method of teaching is easy to understand and has given me confidence in my ability to study Chemistry. He had all the past papers and notes that I needed in preparation for my exams, and it payed off - I had an A in CH1 and CH2! Thank you for everything and I hope to have you again next year.
Chris began working with my son Ashley following a fragmented teaching year at AS level which led to a disappointing Chemistry result. Chris was able to identify quickly the gaps in his knowledge and develop an effective learning framework. The final result moving from an E at AS level to a B at A level speaks for itself.
My daughter sat her GCSEs in 2008 and was very worried about Maths as she could not understand topics in the way she was being taught at school. Chris worked wonders with her, boosting her confidence and explaining concepts with patience and in an easy to understand way. She sat the intermediate paper and got a grade B, the highest possible for this paper. Very happy to recommend Chris to anyone. He is now tutoring her for A-Level Chemistry.
My daughter was struggling in school with Maths so with Chris' expert tuition she not only understands Maths now, but has moved up a set and is sitting her GCSE exam 6 months early! Chris is an excellent tutor and has helped my daughter a lot, she is now very confident and is relishing her maths GCSE in November! He's very prompt, reliable and professional. I can recommend him to anyone for Maths or Science! Thank you Chris you're a star!
I found Science subjects difficult during my GCSE years, therefore I took up Chris as a tutor. Reflecting back on my GCSE results I am thoroughly pleased with them. I continued to have Chris through my college years as I found his guidance and teaching styles effective. Without Chris I feel my grades wouldn't have been as high as what they were and I would have struggled to receive an offer from Cardiff University. Chris is very approachable and easy to talk to, I strongly recommend Chris to anyone.
