Paloma - Latimer Road - Singing

Methodology

I am a professional opera and classical singer who is passionate about teaching. I enjoy sharing my love of music. Although my lessons focus on vocal technique, I also cover performance technique and understanding the effects of emotion and stress upon the body and voice. I help to prepare my pupils to be performers not just singers.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

Singing: I enjoy teaching a wide variety of music and have an equal amount of classical pupils and rock/pop pupils. A lot of pupils are keen on singing folk music, musical theatre or jazz. I like my pupils to sing the music that they are passionate about and I respect pupil's personal tastes in music. My lessons are focused on vocal technique, repertoire and I encourage classical pupils to sing in other languages. I tailor the lesson to suit the pupil's needs and what they would like to achieve, so can include basic music theory in the lesson if they are interested.

Piano: I teach Piano to absolute beginners, both children and adults. Students can learn to play either classical or pop/contemporary music or a mix of both. Experienced musicians who would like to learn to play the piano are also welcome.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have a Bachelor of Music degree with first class honours from Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand. In 2007, I studied at a post-graduate level at the Royal College of Music in London. I have been studying voice for over 15 years and have studied with many different teachers at a high level. As a result I have personally tried many different methods of technique and have heard a wide variety of technical explanation. I am an experienced performer, both in small cabaret like venues and have performed solo to over 100,000 people. I have experience in performance/recording both on television and radio.

Additional Costs:
Any photocopies given are charged at 10p per page. I will suggest appropriate books/digital sheet music according to your level and budget. Most vocal sheet music books are usually between £10-15. There is a great variety of classical books and now also a lot available to download online or to purchase in CD sheet music format and print from your computer. Pop and rock songs can be downloaded off the internet as digital sheet music - they are usually around £2.50 each. Backing Tracks vary from 79p to £5.00 depending on the quality.
Piano books that I recommend are usually between £5-10.
Please be aware that most music published after the 1900's is still subject to copyright laws which are stricter in the UK than other countries so cannot be legally photocopied. It is your responsibility to purchase your own sheet music and backing tracks - they are not included in the lesson price. I can however purchase items on your behalf and have them delivered to the studio - often the extra cost for delivery is minimal as I get a teacher's discount from most stores.

Lessons out of the studio incur a travel fee of £5-10 depending on the location. I am happy to arrange lessons at a studio in Central London (Zone 1) - it is then however the pupil's responsibility to book and pay to rent the room and the travel fee is waived.

- Where do you teach?

Paloma Bruce's Singing Studio is near North Acton (Central) and Harlesden (Bakerloo/Overground) Tube Stations. There are also many nearby bus routes.

Alpha Beta Business Centre
7-11 Minerva Road
Park Royal,
London NW10 6HJ

At my studio I use a Classenti digital piano, have a stereo for playing backing tracks, and have a microphone and amp setup which can be used for electric guitars.

I am willing to travel to pupil's homes and book either a regular weekly time or casual lessons. Teaching at your home will depend on what facilities you have and what you want to achieve in the lesson. Classical Singers will need a well-tuned piano or large keyboard with weighted keys (and stand). Generally Pop/Rock Singers need to have at least a medium-sized keyboard (with stand) and CD player. Advanced Pop/Rock pupils who accompany themselves on guitar may not need the previous items, and I can bring a small keyboard along. It is recommended for Pop/Rock pupils to purchase a microphone to practice on.
Piano pupils will need either a tuned piano in good condition or medium-large keyboard/digital piano with weighted keys (and keyboard stand), as well as a piano stool. It is not necessary for beginners to have a full-size keyboard, however you may find you need to upgrade to a better instrument as the pupil progresses. Having a piano with weighted keys/touch sensitivity is the most important thing.

- When are you available?

Studio opening times:
MON - THURS 12PM-9PM
FRIDAY - 12PM-6PM
SAT - 11am - 5pm

As I am a working opera singer, my schedule can sometimes change. Students can request a preferred weekly time and they are always given first priority when that time is available.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

Singing Pupils: from age 9 to adult. From absolute beginners to advanced/professional singers.
Piano Pupils: absolute beginners only of all ages.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I am happy to help singing pupils to prepare for exams and auditions.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I teach to a high technical level and enjoy helping aspiring professional singers discover their vocal potential. I also teach those who learn for their own personal enjoyment and enjoy teaching a wide variety of musical styles. If you love to learn and have lots of questions, I may be the right teacher for you.

Experience

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have been teaching singing since 2000 when a colleague convinced me to give her lessons - I am very grateful to her, as teaching has become a great passion of mine. Even before then, as a teenager I assisted my choir director with children who had trouble singing in tune. I also took over the musical direction of my high school musical 'My Fair Lady' at the age of 15 and taught the music while accompanying on the piano during rehearsals. Ever since starting to teach, I have had a special interest in helping people who believe they cannot sing in tune. I have taught a wide range of pupils from around the age of 4 to 60. My pupils range from absolute beginners to professional performers and recording artists. I have also taught in both primary and secondary schools in the UK(and have been previously CRB checked).

I started piano lessons at the age of 8 years old studying privately in New Zealand with Graeme Cosslett, and later with Gillian Bibby. As a teenager, I was the Organ Scholar at St. Mary's College (Wellington, New Zealand) with a full scholarship for two years, and performances at school events. I later had keyboard class lessons with Dan Poynton at Victoria University, (New Zealand). While studying, I often helped accompany singers informally during classes at my University and at the Royal College of Music. In more recent years, I have often been called upon to assist in opera productions, by helping colleagues to learn repertoire as well as occasionally accompanying during rehearsals.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I have been CRB checked when teaching at primary/secondary schools.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I have studied voice with Justin Lavender, Frances Wilson, Dame Malvina Major, Emily Mair, Patrick Power, Geoffrey Coker and Lesley Graham. Schools I have attended are the Royal College of Music (London), Victoria University of Wellington (Now the NZ School of Music), NZ Singing School and New Zealand Opera School. I have performed in Masterclasses with Grace Bumbry, Sir Philip Ledger, Anthony Rolfe-Johnson, Martin André, Jonathan Papp and Madame Virginia Zeani.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

Some of my current students include choral singers, a pop backing singer (previously under a record label) who is working towards becoming a lead singer, an indie singer who writes his own music and is doing gigs around the UK, an actor who is developing his singing voice, and a classical singer who is working towards grade exams and auditioning to study at a music college.
