My teaching methodology is specific to each student. The study of literature is about learning how to read creatively and to be able to express and support one's ideas. This skill can be taught with whatever text the students find interesting.
I have taught English literature and the English language in the UK and Russia for the last three years. I am available to teach GCSE, A-Level and university students in literature and any student who is studying English as a second language.
Education:
(2013- 2016) King’s College London, BA,
BA English Language and Literature, 2:1.
Over the course of three years, I studied texts as diverse as the earliest medieval hagiography to contemporary avant-garde American literature. The virtue of an English degree is that while reading hundreds of books, from sonnet sequences to epic novels, I learnt how to synthesise and interpret information. While at King’s, I also took an extra-curricular course in theology and philosophy and graduated as an associate of King’s College. I have good organisational skills and I am not easily overwhelmed.
(2010-2012) Solihull Sixth Form College, A-Levels,
English Literature, A, History, A, Government and Politics, A.
(2005-2010) Henley-in-Arden High School, GCSEs,
10 GCSEs A-B, including an A in English, Mathematics and Science.
Work Experience:
(2015-Present) Freelance Proofreading (Part time) Jan Devletoglu’s The Good Bad Armenian is a memoir about the author’s experiences as a war correspondent of forty years standing. It was published in Turkey in 2014 and since 2015 I have been working with the author and the translator to prepare it for publication in the UK. My responsibilities include correcting mistakes in the translation and editing the book for an English readership. I also regularly proofread academic essays for acquaintances and friends.
(September 2016-July 2017) Freelance Tutor (Part time) I tutored a thirty year old man who spoke English as a second language. We studied so that he could acquire a GSCE in English. My other student was a 15 year old girl with whom I studied GCSE mathematics. I planned all my own lessons and enjoyed tutoring immensely. Working with students one on one is a pleasure because I am inspired by their progress and I enjoy being able to learn from them as they do from me.
(March 2017-July 2017) Freelance Copywriter (Full time) I worked as a copywriter for Fat Joe Ltd and was responsible for writing between five to eight articles a day, or 4000 words in total. The articles were published in online magazines and blogs and covered a diverse variety of topics including the financial markets and environmental issues, as well as lifestyle articles. It was fun and creative. I worked the hours that I choose and needed to be self-disciplined in my approach to the job.
(July 2017-December 2018) Teacher, EF Tverskaya (Full time) Teaching English to adults in Moscow is a demanding but joyous job. I taught twenty seven classes each week to between one and twenty five students in lessons that were putatively about life and business but which all had a detailed grammar component. I used humour in my classes and incorporated my knowledge of English language culture to give my students what I hope is an opportunity to use the English language to further their ambitions, whether professional or personal.
Interests & Skills:
I am a naturally curious person. I read voraciously, I’m learning Russian and I’m writing a novel. I am a chess enthusiast. I play every day and was a member of both the KCL chess club and the Casual Chess Club in Central London. I’ve travelled to several countries to watch tournaments and my ambition is to become a FIDE master. I have an abiding interest in jazz as well as a keen interest in cinema. I am a studious, thoughtful person and while I am happy to work alone for long periods of time, I am just as happy to work alongside others. I want to do something useful and to give other people the benefit of my knowledge and experience. I graduated from King’s College London and I understand that this is a privilege, the fruits of which I want to share.
