I approach my first lessons by doing a general test/ evaluation of the student's understanding of the subject. Once marking and explaining the correct answers in detail, I will then work on the student's weak points with them. This will include creating posters, cheat-sheets, example questions while reassuring them that they are highly capable of improving. Once a month, we may do general tests on topics to consolidate their knowledge. My method to not only help them academically, but to install the confidence in them to tackle every academic challenge they face with no fear and a clear head, which a lot of careless teachers fall short of. I find that confident students regardless of their abilities can perform better than the most smartest students, and I aim to teach my students to tackle questions logically connecting their contextual knowledge with new situations.
My goal as your mentor is to help you create a solid understanding on your subject topics, passing the point where you can comfortably communicate your ideas on what you’ve learnt. Thankfully, I was able to achieve an A* in GCSE Maths in year 9 on early entry and an A in FSMQ in year 10 due to the strong support of my teachers and family. In turn, I would love to provide that supporting hand to those I mentor so that they achieve what they are fully capable of.
Dedication, learning how to motivate yourself, and setting reachable goals are three of many skills that I have developed over the years and especially through being Head Girl of my school. Therefore, I try to inspire those I mentor to develop traits like these, to ensure that they easily achieved their goal and can use these in the future to open new opportunities for themselves.
I am very passionate about being a tutor as I know that if I was younger, I definitely would have enjoyed and benefitted from having an older student to support me. I believe that this is very encouraging, largely different from normal coaching or teaching, as I could be an approachable and friendly role model those I mentor. This is important as there may be parts of their subjects that friends, peers or teachers may not be able to help students understand. Also in contrast, I am relatable so that those I mentor can connect with me and feel confident in sharing her struggles both academically and socially, knowing that I’d be very likely to understand and have experienced this myself.
I believe that an effective tutor is one that has patience and resilience to be there to support their student, no matter how long you may have to explain something to them nor how difficult they may act towards you. I think it is important to create a relationship between you and the student, where you can be openly honest with each other and express any worries or concerns that will hinder the student’s success. Furthermore, I feel that it is vital for a tutor to be enthusiastic when the student makes progress toward their goal, but also continues heartening them to aim higher and see no limit to their potential success.
I would like to develop my teaching skills and how to explain topics in fresh understandable ways to my students. I know that by assisting my students with revision techniques and routines, it also gave me incentive to do the same for myself, subsequently causing us to grow together into better students. This allowed me to acknowledge that tutoring has a two-way gain and as we worked together, we could bounce ideas off one another.
Hey! My name is Gloria and I am a student studying in Birmingham University and but based in South East London. I’m interested in STEM subjects and aspire to become a Chemical Engineer after university. Having had a year’s experience, being a Coachbright science and maths mentor to 5 students in my local area, I am more than capable in ensuring that my students not only attain their academic goal, but grow in confidence in their academic ability and potential.
I am eager to positively impact society by working with others to achieve a common goal. I believe I am an excellent team-player as I am committed to keeping up morale, enthusiasm and putting emphasis on the importance of teamwork. Furthermore, being a coach in the Coachbright programme(a charity programme for student tutors), and also a freelance tutor, I wholeheartedly am committed in ensuring the mental wellbeing and academic progress of those that I tutor. I feel that the communication and organisations skills that I have developed over being a tutor are transferrable and can be applied to whatever work I do.
I am a fantastic communicator, and regularly have been able to practice my skills through hosting or organising events as being Head girl of my school’s student body. Holding a position of authority and working diligently to further improve the great quality of my school has really shaped me into a self-dependant young woman. I’ve been able to greatly develop my ability to work efficiently under-pressure and use logic to quickly create solutions to unexpected situations. I naturally take roles of leadership in my daily life with group activities where others would trust me to organise or present ideas. Having regularly delivered speeches at my college assemblies, I have grown into a confident public speaker.
In addition to this, I have an exceptional ability to engage with a variety of people as I am very approachable and easy to talk to. For instance, I have taken part in multiple drama programmes from a youth drama project at Roundhouse centred in Camden, to an all ages dance project hosted by Dance Odyssey.
As a proactive individual, I am always willing to engage with my community and school. For example, for Meninadanca, which houses and educates young Brazilian girls preventing them from engaging in child prostitution to support their families, I was a lead fundraiser organising a campaign through fortnightly cake sales. Often buying most of the product with my own money or receiving kind bakery donations, myself and the youth at my church could raise about £800. I believe this ability stems from my strong passion on bettering the world of today. I ensured that this campaign ran for so long as I deeply believe that education and safety should be readily available to all youth and not at all seen as a luxury to some.
Confident, versatile and devoted are three words that I would use to describe myself, and rare qualities that distinguish me as a role model. Achieving an A* in Maths in year9, I am committed to pushing myself academically and fulfilling my full potential which is a quality that I feel that this presents me as an example to younger students. Additionally, participating in netball and basketball teams and winning many games and tournaments, I feel that young people can be inspired by my dedication and persistence and therefore be encouraged to be ambitious. Expanding my passion for sports and becoming part of the London Youth Academy motivates students to take their ambitions outside of school and have commitment.
I feel that I have a variety of talents, spanning from effectively engaging with young and mature people alike, being trustworthy, helping others overcome their problems and express their emotions.
