Voluntary work

May 2017: Raleigh international – Fundraising
This involved helping volunteers fundraise to achieve their goal. The amount raised would help the charity continue its work in disadvantaged third world countries, such as Tanzania.

June 2015: British Heart Foundation, Westgate
During my time volunteering at the charity shop I helped in the sales of furniture and electricals to fund research into heart disease. I spoke to customers on the shop floor about their queries and explained to them the significance of their purchases in terms of the development in knowledge of heart disease and its cures.

Jan 2015 – April 2015: Bradford Girls’ Grammar School, GCSE Maths mentoring
Alongside my A-level studies I took on the responsibility of mentoring a couple of year 10 and 11 GCSE Maths students, whom were struggling in some topics. Acquiring a high level of mathematical ability during my A-level maths course, enabled me to aid the students and help them to strengthen their knowledge in the areas that they found difficult.

Sept 2014 – April 2015: Lady Royd Primary School
I was a teaching assistant in a year 4 class. This involved helping the children in the tasks set by their teacher and conducting guided reading sessions with the pupils on a one to one basis. This allowed me to develop and hone my ability of being able to engage with young minds.

Work Experience

July 2017 – August 2017 Tesco Pharmacy
I spent two months working in a pharmacy on a voluntary basis, My basic roles included, maintaining the back wall, dispensing printed scripts, putting away orders and on occasion handling medications whilst filling dosette trays or diluting antibiotics.

October 2015 - DayNight Pharmacy
During my week at the pharmacy I worked at the till and served customers daily. I also observed behind the scenes and carried out tasks such as counting all the dispensed medicines for the day and grouping prescriptions as well as carrying out stock checks. This advanced my understanding of working in a professional environment.

August 2015 – Grange Dental Practice
I spent a week shadowing a dentist. This involved observing common dental procedures, whilst sitting in with routine dental appointments, and provided me with a detailed insight into the work of dentists.

July 2015 – Rockwell and Wrose Medical Practice
In the summer of 2015 I undertook a placement at a GP medical practice to experience first-hand observations in primary care. Sitting in the consultant rooms with GPs’ during their routine appointments with patients, as well as visiting bedridden patients with GPs’ allowed me to experience the relationship of the GP and the patient from a very different angle.

Extracurricular activities

September 2012 – Feb 2015: Debating society
During my final few years of high school, I joined the schools debating society. As well as having mini debates within the society of current issues concerning the world, we entered many regional and national competitions including the Cambridge schools public speaking contest. My personal achievement included coming second in the MUN debate.

September 2014: First Aid training
I successfully completed a fully qualifying first aid training course which ultimately equipped me with the necessary skills for practicing first aid in the most testing and threatening situations – to able to provide medical aid fast.

Skills

Multilingual
My experiences have allowed me to develop my language skills. As well as this residing in a very multi-ethnic and cultural society, has emphasised the need for the ability to speak several languages to converse with people. I can converse fluently in English, Urdu, and Punjabi, and am in the process of learning Arabic.

Leadership
I have demonstrated and developed my leadership skills in many ways. Firstly, when I attended the University of Hull summer school, as part of an orienteering challenge, I had to actively take the lead within my group, guiding them through the challenge successfully.

Computing
MS Office proficient, especially Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Confidence
My confidence significantly developed through joining the debating society both at school and sixth form

Interests

I like to read journals specifically based around my course such as the Pharmaceutical Journal, as well as other scientific publications like the Lancet and the New Scientist. I also enjoy reading, particularly sci-fi novels and learning new skills. Most recently I have taken up Arabic and driving lessons.
