Classical Greek and Latin are notoriously difficult languages, featuring much more inflection, conjugation and syntactical complexity than English. In order to translate these languages successfully, two things are required: good grammatical knowledge as well as the right mindset and methodology to decrypt the meaning of a sentence in these ancient languages. It is possible to have a comprehensive knowledge of the grammar but to struggle with the translation of unabridged texts. I teach my students strategies to handle the complex word order of these ancient languages. Of course, I also make sure that the student has a thorough knowledge of grammatical and syntactical rules so that translation is, as far as possible, a logical act of problem solving rather than mere guesswork.
The ancient texts are full of life and, in my opinion, of significant relevance to modern life. In discussing a set text, a student will become aware of how the reward of being able to read and learn from these ancient texts is worth the linguistic struggle.
