Phillip - Totteridge - Maths

Methodology

I have worked for 20 years as a mathematics educator and educational researcher.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

Mathematics.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

BSc in Physics (Durham University)
PhD in Applied Mathematics (Imperial College)
MA in Mathematics Education (Institute of Education, London)

Since obtaining my PhD, I have done educational research in mathematics for nearly 20 years, 8 years at university level, and 12 years at school/college level. I worked for many years at the Institute of Education, University of London, and also worked at the University of Sussex (please search on my name to find out more).

- How much do you charge?

£30-35 per hour, plus travel expenses if a long way to travel (but usually none if I can cycle). Lower rates for online tutorials, by negotiation.

- Where do you teach?

At the student's home. For 18+ students, I can meet you at other convenient locations (cafe, pub). It can work to do a combination of face-to-face and online tutorials, however I personally feel that online-only is a bit limiting therefore I usually do not work that way.

- When are you available?

Evenings and weekends.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

11 to 16: KS3 and GCSE. 11+/13+ scholarship/entrance tests
Post 16 GCSE and equivalent courses.
A level.
QTS numeracy test for teachers.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

11+/13+ scholarship/entrance tests
GCSE Mathematics
A Level Mathematics
QTS numeracy test

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

Usually by Skype or Google+

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Mathematics experienced in school can be a horribly fragmented experience, without much meaning or apparent purpose. Tests and exams reinforce this feeling. Whilst it is important to pass the tests and exams, mathematical understanding comes from considering the subject more broadly, thinking about connections between topics, historical origins, and uses and applications of mathematical ideas. Once you grasp these connections, it should be possible to be successful in school mathematics because you can see the subject as more meaningful.

Experience

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have taught mathematics at university level, and tutored in mathematics at secondary and university levels. I have done a lot of research work on making learning and teaching in secondary schools a better experience for students and teachers.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

CRB certificate 2010, 2011.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

Association of Teachers of Mathematics

- Tell me about some of your current students.

In recent months, the majority of my students have been: (a) teachers/students preparing for the QTS numeracy test. (b) KS3 students, including one student preparing for 13+ scholarship to Westminster School. Whatever the level, the thing which is most satisfying for me is supporting students to empower themselves as mathematicians.
