I explored a variety of methods and literature and now mould different techniques of teaching to each individual's inclination. I usually spend part of the lesson playing without reading music scores, and part on approaching the written music. I think both are invaluable and one should not limit the other. My main objective, at the beginning of anybody's journey, is to understand chords and harmony form the start, as this gives a clearer and simpler way to read music and also is the base of improvisation and composition. I am able to prepare for grade exams, I consider these a good performing exercise, but I do not see this as a target as they need to be consequence of practise and understanding that goes over and above the exam syllabus.
Classically trained pianist, I now approach music with an open view. I come from Italy and moved to UK where I completed my qualifications at the Guildhall School of music, having had tutorng from a german composer who introduced me to contemporary music.
I charge £40 per hour, however I add £10 if I travel to students' houses.
Piano teacher/ accompanist 2000-ongoing
I have been giving piano and music lessons to children in the Croydon, Brighton and Richmond area since 2000.
I have been teaching children ranging from ages 4 to 16, also sometimes adults and young college students, in my own home and at some of my pupils’.
I have been working in the Chiswick Saturday Music Centre since September 2016, during term time as a piano teacher: this runs on Saturday mornings in Chiswick High School, and lessons last from 20 to 40 minutes: I currently have pupils’ ages 5-16 and a couple of adults.
I have accompanied pupils in music exams in Violin, Clarinet and Saxophone (jazz and classical), for ABRSM and Trinity Grade exams 1-8, usually giving a few lessons in preparation for the exam performance.
Parent Helper at Darell Primary School 2008-2017
I helped with Reading and Maths at my childrens’ school twice a week for the past seven years, so I am very familiar with the school environment and working with children on a one-to-one basis, taking them out from their classes for their sessions.
Support worker for People with Learning Disabilities Jan 1999 – Jul 2012
I worked for many years with adults and children with learning disabilities, first as a full-time Support worker in Ealing, in a residential home for people with severe learning disabilities, then as a Relief Worker, for Mencap and Certitude, in London.
I therefore am also able to relate to people with a different level of understanding and can modify my language and methods to accomodate a student with special needs.
From Jan-Dec 2020 I will be completing the CME (Certificate for Music Educators) through Morley College, where I have recently enrolled.
I have been learning jazz and Improvisation through private tuition and following courses, to complement my classical training.
