Hi I'm offering piano lessons to all ages and levels either at my home in Queens Park or yours!
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach piano to all ages and all levels.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I studied for my undergraduate degree at the Royal Academy of Music in London. I then went on to complete a postgraduate diploma at the Moscow Conservatoire.
As a performer:
This season sees James appearing with Christian Gerhaher at the Wigmore Hall, Amsterdam Concertgebouw and Dusseldorf Tonhalle. Other performances include recitals at the Banff Centre of the Arts in Canada as well as recitals and festivals throughout the UK.
As an accompanist James has been a Kirckman Society artist and performed numerous times at Wigmore Hall with Benjamin Appl, Jonathan McGovern and Anna Huntley. Under the Countess of Munster Recital Scheme, James has appeared throughout the UK with sopranos Raphaela Papadakis and Alison Rose, and performs regularly in recitals with singers including Ian Bostridge, Joan Rodgers, Elizabeth Watts, Ruby Hughes, Marcus Farnsworth and Katherine Broderick.
Highlights of last season saw James appearing at the Oxford Lieder Festival and at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden with Alison Rose as well as a festival in Munich with Ingolf Turban, Maximilian Hornung and Gerold Huber.
James has recorded for BBC radio 3 in live broadcasts with Joan Rodgers, appeared on live BBC television with Ruby Hughes and was featured as a 'new face' by the Daily Telegraph.
- How much do you charge?
My fee is £60 an hour.
- Where do you teach?
I teach at my house in Queens Park NW6. It's located about two minutes from the tube station and is also close to Brondesbury Park
and Kilburn Park Stations. I have a lovely teaching space with a beautiful Steinway grand piano. I can be persuaded to travel but it depends on whereabouts!
(by the way the location on the map above isn't accurate, I live much nearer to Queens Park station)
- When are you available?
I'm currently accepting students on weekdays but please contact me if you're interested in a specific day and time.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach all ages and levels from children to adults.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I generally prepare my pupils for the ABRSM board graded exams. I have been featured on the CDs that come with the Associated Board graded pieces!
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Nietzsche said that without music, life would be a mistake. I believe this wholeheartedly and see music lessons as an opportunity to give added
meaning, beauty and fun to our lives. As a teacher that is what I hope to impart on my students and nothing is more satisfying than to see the lives of others
enriched by this sharing of music.
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have taught since I was around 15, teaching the kids of my school teachers and friends. Since then I have taught at the Royal College of Music JD
and I'm currently on the music staff at St Paul' School in Barnes and regularly give masterclasses at Oxford University.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
- Where and with whom did you train?
I completed my undergraduate degree at the Royal Academy of Music (BMus Hons) and I have a postgraduate diploma from the Moscow Conservatoire.
I was a junior exhibitioner at the Royal College of Music for many years (where I subsequently taught). I have been a scholar at the Britten Pears Programme
in Aldeburgh and the European Academy of Music in Aix en Provence. I've studied privately with the best teachers and musicians in the world as well as in public masterclasses.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
My current students range from eight years old to seventy years old, and have a very wide range of abilities and interests. Some are complete beginners while others have their own performing careers underway (and everything in between, of course!)
