I have over twenty five years' teaching experience teaching people from all walks of life and all ages. My pupils thrive, whether complete beginners or more advanced and I love to see their progress.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
Piano, both traditional "Classical" and other genres, for example, Rockschool and ABRSM Jazz piano grade exams. Although music theory is included to some extent by necessity in piano lessons, I also give music theory lessons for those who are working towards Theory grade exams, such as ABRSM and Trinity College London Grade 5 Theory.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have the following: LTCL (Mus.Ed), Cert.Mus.Ed.(TCL), ALCM (Perf.) (and also the CTLLS in class teaching).
- How much do you charge?
Half hour lessons work out at £15.30 and 45-minute lessons are £22.95 as my hourly rate is £30.60. Adult pupils tend to be happier with longer piano lessons and not necessarily every week, whereas lessons of half an hour or less tend to suit younger pupils best - it depends on their age, concentration level and the stage they have reached, so lesson times vary to suit individuals.
- Where do you teach?
I teach at home in Stopsley, Luton.
- When are you available?
By arrangement. We find a day and time which is the most suitable, then the lesson will take place on the same day and at that same time every week (often fortnightly for adults). Usually I teach during term time only and not during the school holidays, but sometimes extra lessons can be arranged if required.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
Age: from the age of seven years upwards - there is no upper age limit as it's never too late to learn!
Level: from complete beginners onwards.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
Whatever their aspirations are, we try to meet them, so if pupils wish to work towards piano exams I prepare them for the grade exams of either Trinity College London or the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) or Rockschool or London College of Music. If their goal is to pass Grade 5 Theory then Theory lessons can easily be arranged. My pupils' pass rate is 100%.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Lessons should be an enjoyable experience for both the teacher and the pupil - they are constructed to suit you and your goals, whatever they are, whichever style of music you wish to play. The important thing to remember is that the more often you practise, the quicker you will progress and notice the results!
- What kind of experience do you have?
As mentioned above, I have been teaching pupils from all walks of life, all ages, all stages, from complete beginners to "returners", those who are preparing for their GCSE or A-Level Music Recitals, those who are working towards graded music exams and those who want to play for their own pleasure without taking any exams. As pupils' goals vary, so has my experience varied a great deal. SEN pupils (e.g. those with dyslexia) welcome.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes I do.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I have qualifications from London College of Music, Trinity College London and the University of Greenwich.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
Yes, I am a member of two professional associations; the ISM (Incorporated Society of Musicians) of which I am a fellow (FISM) and EPTA (UK) Ltd. (European Piano Teachers' Association), of which I am the Regional Organiser for the Hertfordshire branch. Also I co-run the Luton Exam Centre for the instrumental and theory exams of Trinity College London.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
The greatest excitement I witness is when a pupil starts to play hands together for the very first time! Passing that first piano exam is another great cause for excitement, even more so when they pass with merit or distinction. Some teenage pupils have been very successful in the recital element of A-level Music. A few adult pupils are working on pieces which they really enjoy playing, improving all the time and augmenting their repertoire list!
