I have over twenty five years' teaching experience teaching people from all walks of life and all ages. My pupils thrive, whether complete beginners or more advanced and I love to see their progress.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
Piano - all types of piano music including traditional Classical. I am now specialising in teaching adults.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have the following: LTCL (Mus.Ed), Cert.Mus.Ed.(TCL), ALCM (Perf.) (and also the CTLLS in class teaching).
- How much do you charge?
45-minute lessons are £24.00 (Sept. 2020) and my hourly rate is £32. Adult pupils tend to be happier with longer piano lessons and not necessarily every week. I find that it depends concentration level and the stage they have reached at piano, if any, so lesson times vary to suit individuals.
- Where do you teach?
I teach at home in Stopsley, Luton - currently via Zoom.
- When are you available?
By arrangement. We find a day and time which is the most suitable - some pupils might prefer their lessons to be weekly; others may prefer fortnightly lessons.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
Age: I am now specialising in teaching adults. There is no upper age limit as it's never too late to learn!
Level: from complete beginners onwards.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
Whatever their aspirations are, we endeavour to meet them; if pupils wish to work towards passing piano exams - from Initial upwards - I prepare them accordingly (my pupils' pass rate is 100%); or their goal might be to play songs from the shows or to pass Grade 5 Theory, or to work towards the standard of playing they achieved in their youth.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Lessons should be an enjoyable experience for both the teacher and the pupil - they are constructed to suit you and your goals, whatever they are, whichever style of music you wish to play. The important thing to remember is that the more often you practise, the quicker you will progress and notice the results!
- What kind of experience do you have?
As mentioned above, I have been teaching pupils from all walks of life, all ages, all stages, from complete beginners to "returners", those who want to play for their own pleasure without taking any exams; those who would like to reach the playing standard they once had; those who are working towards graded music exams and exam recitals. As pupils' goals vary, so has my experience varied a great deal and has included teaching SEN pupils - those with special educational needs, for instance those with dyslexia.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes I do.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I have qualifications from London College of Music, Trinity College London and the University of Greenwich.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
Yes, I am a member of two professional associations; the ISM (Incorporated Society of Musicians) of which I am a fellow (FISM) and EPTA (UK) Ltd. (European Piano Teachers' Association), of which I am the Regional Organiser for the Hertfordshire branch.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
I have quite a mixture of pupils from beginners upwards. When a fairly new pupil starts to play hands together for the very first time, this is a great cause for excitement! Some of my adult pupils are working on pieces they have always wanted to play, improving all the time and augmenting their repertoire list. Others are "returners" who are trying to regain the standard of playing they had in their youth, really enjoying playing the favourite pieces they used to know and some are beginners.
