- What kind of experience do you have?
Children: I very much enjoy teaching children from beginner to grade level practical ( piano)and grade 5 theory . In general I teach school age children from age 6 upwards although my youngest pupil is four and a half ! The correct starting age depends on each individual and I have had beginners of all ages.Children often like to take examinationsas it gives them a goal and improves their playing.
I mainly use the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music to enter pupils for examinations.I enter pupils ( children and adults)for grade examinations when they are ready ( grades 1-7 ABRSM ) and use a variety of repertoire and study books to help them with their piano technique.I have had several families who enjoy learning together and parents and children may be working towards the same examination.
.For young beginners I have developed resources which help children to focus in on the piano using visual cues and motivate them by using puppets, singing and stories
Special needs . I have an interest in teaching children /adults with special needs and am developing a client base where I have developed resources to help children and adults with special needs to access the piano.
Adults. I enjoy teaching adults and aim to be approachable in my teaching style taking into account any prior knowledge although non is necessary. Adults can be underconfident and I believe it is especially important to set goals together have fun and motivate by using appropriate repertoire. I have taught adult beginners with no previous musical experience to distinction level at grade 1 within their first year of learning the piano. However I understand that whilst taking examinations is motivating some adults prefer simply to learn for pleasure.
I enjoy all types of music from popular to classical. I am classically trained but also enjoy playing jazz. My approach to teaching the piano includes an appreciation of enjoying, listening and involving students with music at their own pace. I am also very experienced using music with children with learning difficulties to help them with their holistic development .
As well as teaching the piano I have developed groups which aim to develop musical ability , for young children aged from two years upwards which will help them with their musical development. I teach my current groups in my own music studio. These groups use early pre instrumental skills to help children develop their musical ability. They involve movement , rhymes, stories and use non tuned instruments.
