Growing up I have always been creative and enjoy thinking outside the box. I believe tutoring can be creative in thinking of ways to engage the children, whether it's using blocks to help breakdown complicated maths problems. Tutoring can be tailored to each student and I find satisfaction in witnessing first hand the progression of students both in terms of performance and confidence. I feel education is fundamental to who we are as individuals and has a great impact on future generations. I studied Politics, Philosophy and Economics at the University of Manchester graduating with a 2.1 and recognised the importance of self-motivation, time management and organisational skills. After university I completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Event Management with Marketing and Communications. This provided an opportunity to develop my communication and presentation skills and increased my competence and confidence in public speaking. I am currently considering a career within teaching and applying to start a PGCE in Citizenship in September, 2021.
I have over six months experience in giving tailored lessons. I have taught a range of ages from year 2s to year 12s. My experience has taught me how to adapt my style of lessons to ensure the student stays interested. I have tried and tested several methods to help improve confidence starting with easier questions and breaking down the harder ones as time goes on. This helps my students progress and develop.
At university I trained to become a PASS (Peer Assisted Study Sessions) leader for Introductory Mathematics. This involved using different techniques to encourage students to interact with one another and build confidence so they could discuss the subject without fear or anxiety. I recognised the importance of lesson planning and tailoring your lesson based on the students’ needs and making sure the lesson was engaging with plenty of group activity. I really enjoyed being a PASS leader because it was heart warming to see the students develop as they became more confident in comfortable surroundings. This also encouraged the more quiet ones to participate more as time went by and it was not long before they shed their apprehension and nervousness. I also found this with my role as a Peer Mentor, helping to provide support and guidance to new students at the university both academically and socially.
