Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have worked in a primary school for three years and I run an annual, very popular, summer scheme in Southwark for local children aged 7-11. I enjoy working with children who lack confidence and I provide highly personalised sessions with interactive engaging activities to help them overcome this. I have done a lot of work with children who are struggling to read and by the end of our time working together my students are confident readers who are beginning to enjoy exploring literature. I strongly believe the key to successful tutoring and good results can be found in listening to each of my pupil's personal concerns and anxieties, and working together to then tackle them face on.

I have worked as tutor for GCSE students for three years - English results have all been either A*s or A's.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I have a current Enhanced DBS Check – copy available on request.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I currently tutor two GCSE students for English Language and English Literature. I have supported them with essay writing, close textual analysis and general exam technique. I have recently received the news that one of my pupils has been awarded an A* in her English language exam (she had been aiming for a C grade). We are both thrilled with the results!

I also tutor two primary school students preparing them for year six transition and SATs exams. We do a lot of cursive writing practise, comprehension; and play games to spot adjectives, verbs and nouns, and write sentences using our own. I strongly believe that these should be fun and enjoyable sessions which encourage children that reading and writing can be fun. We are currently working on a project based on David Walliams' very funny book Mr Stink!

I fortnightly work with a little girl who is struggling with reading and whose parents were anxious about her reception to year 1 transition. As she is only 5 we play lots of reading and phonics games and practise our writing on a special whiteboard. It is important to me that these sessions incorporate writing, reading and play as I want reading to be a positive thing for her rather than something tricky and boring. These sessions are going really well; we read a different book every week and do activities based around it. We loved reading 'Dear Greenpeace' and 'Madeline' together.

I have been working with an iGCSE student in Hong Kong over Skype. These have been intense revision sessions. We have worked together every day over half term and have completed lots of past papers, analysed mark schemes and come up with a strategy for in the exam! I aim to make these sessions as enjoyable as possible; often taking the exam paper out of context and applying the skills to students own interests and knowledge. For example we thought about what is implicit and what is explicit in Braddon's novel 'Lady Audley's Secret' as it was something we were finding a little tricky! This made the exercise more engaging and removed her mental block - she loved the first two chapters of 'Lady Audley's Secret' so much that she has decided to start reading it after her exam is over! We have recently received the news that this pupil achieved an A* in her English Language exam. She is thrilled; she had previously been predicted a C.

I have been working with a student preparing for her EdExcel History exams. In our initial sessions we have been thinking about the significant factors and historical events which have led to revolution. We have compared this to modern events such as the London Riots in 2011 and the election of Donald Trump in 2016. We have analysed sources and reapplied the skills needed for the history exam to modern events. Together we tackle past papers, make big time lines and structure and write model answers together.

I am also providing support for an 11 year old anxious about a secondary school interview he has coming up. We practise interview questions and think about the kind of answers the interviewer would like to hear. We have thought about what the interview is going to be like and what the interview room will be like and tried to think about it in a positive way rather than something scary. We have practised hand shakes and using our inside voice to create the best possible impression!

Poppy has really helped to build my daughter's confidence in reading and writing. She has shown great creativity in her strategies to overcome my daughter's reluctance in reading so much so that reading is no longer a battle or a chore! I would highly recommend Poppy.
