Personal Profile:
Currently, I have completed my GCSE’s and I am interested in working in retail as I believe that I have the skills required to maintain this role. My ability to confidently interact with other people will allow me to be suited to this job as it makes me easily approachable and welcoming to others as well as the fact that it will help me assist others and be comfortable in my working environment with my colleagues.
While in secondary education at Sarah Bonnell School, I have been given many opportunities which allowed me to gain confidence, whether it be speaking publicly or in a small group. This has allowed me to grow as a leader and improve my confidence in communicating with others.
One opportunity that I was able to take part in was a dragon’s den style event at KPMG in Canary Wharf where we worked in groups to pitch an idea to a panel of judges and compete against other groups. This opportunity allowed me to gain and develop many skills such as group work, leadership and communication. It allowed me to take responsibility for one role as a leader and to take into account other people’s ideas and strengths and using them to pitch an idea. It has made me understand that leadership is not about taking charge but to understand the strengths and weaknesses of your peers and figure out a way to incorporate everyone’s skills to receive a good outcome. Prior to receiving this opportunity, I was not as confident in speaking publically or taking charge of a group however this opportunity has allowed me to use my voice and understand that in a business environment, my voice and the way I speak and pitch can influence the decisions made. This gave me the confidence to speak publicly without feeling anxious. Furthermore, working in a business environment at KPMG allowed me to get an insight into business and work ethics as well as being exposed to different pathways I could take in the future such as in retail.
Whilst in secondary education, I was quite unsure about what I wished to do in the future and what pathways to take which made me realise that I want to explore as many different pathways as I can to make myself feel more secure in the decisions I make in the future. I was grateful to receive many different opportunities during my time in Sarah Bonnell such as organising an art exhibition for the school. I took the opportunity to be one of two curators of an exhibition showcasing the students’ talented artwork. This has taught me that to become a strong leader, you need to be able to be vocal, as well as taking into account your peers ideas and to include everyone. I have always been quiet and reserved so taking part in such opportunities has allowed me to grow as a person and discover different qualities about myself that I never knew I had. I now use these qualities in my everyday life as I feel that they’re so important to have.
I love to hunt for new opportunities for my own benefit and to help out my community. Recently, I took part in being a volunteer for the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park baseball games where many people all over the world came together as a community and enjoyed the games. Seeing how sports makes people come together and enjoy an event as was one was the main reason I was excited to volunteer as I loved the community spirit and as a volunteer, I wanted to help maintain that. As a volunteer, I worked with a number of other volunteers to make sure that everyone was enjoying themselves and making them feel welcome as well as getting to know different people. I believe that the opportunities I have been exposed to in the past have helped me to come out of my shell and be more confident in speaking to others.
One opportunity that I was very grateful to have received is to take part in the NCS challenge where I stayed at a 5-day residential camping site with a group of people I didn't know and we did many different activities together. I found that with all the opportunities I have been given in the past, they've allowed me to be confident in speaking to others and to have the leadership qualities within a group. I found that it was easier to communicate to a group of people that I didn't know and to be the one to speak up, give ideas and encouragement to my peers and I found that those around me were more welcoming and engaging. This experience has allowed me to come out of my comfort zone and try new experiences as well as meeting incredible people and finding out more about others and myself.
These experiences have made me realise how much I love communicating with other people and how dedicated I am to try out new experiences. I believe that the more I experience in life, the more opportunities and challenges I will face and I will be able to figure out ways to overcome these challenges and become a better person.
I have had a couple of experiences in a working environment. During my time in secondary education, I was given the chance to work in my previous primary school because I love working with children and being in an environment with friendly people as it allowed me to feel more comfortable in my working environment. I enjoyed working with my colleagues, ensuring that the children are in a suitable learning environment and I learned that whatever career path I decide to take, it is important to have great relationships with those you work with because it makes your working environment more enjoyable.
I also have experience in being a teacher assistant at my local mosque where I worked with students aged 6-17 and helped them with their arabic recitation and knowledge. In this working environment, it has made me comfortable in teaching others as well as communicating with others as I learned that different people need to be spoken to in different ways to help them understand certain things. It has made me realise that sometimes I need to take a different approach in terms of communicating with different people as sometimes I need to be more patient with people or stern with others but it has made me realise that everyone is different but regardless, I love to communicate with people, meet new people and experience as much as I can.
