I teach by prioritising the most useful content for my students, rather than covering topics that may or may not be relevant to their language learning goals.
Usually, we will cover the most important language structures first, targeting the most used grammar and the words most commonly said and written.
Why would we do that? This teaches you the most relevant and commonly needed language first (roughly 80% of what you'll actually hear, see and speak). This will take you to higher levels of understanding much, much earlier. It also gives you a more practically useful language arsenal much quicker than you would usually get it.
Usually I recommend taking a course of 3 lessons with me, then reviewing everything in the following week to accurately gauge your progress and response to things. Then, we can adapt if necessary to what your personal needs and strengths are.
Once we are teaching comfortably within your preferred learning styles, your target language is easier built autonomously, and further sessions will become both cheaper and optional. Why? Once you've got a fundamental, functional start to a language and its structures, the acquisition of it becomes much, much easier to learn, but also to teach. It also means that the process of learning for you becomes less mentally taxing, and you can 'perform' it much more regularly without feeling fatigued. Instead of spending the same amount per session, I'd then recommend one more session per week at a lower rate!
I am an experienced linguist (graduate of both the University of Leeds and the Open University) and have both translation experience and teaching experience professionally.
I hold high level qualifications in skills training, relevant to both languages and other professional training domains. I have been taught academically by both the Alliance Française and UK universities. My speaking experience abroad has been amassed mainly in Île-de-France and the Alps, though I have spent a little time in the South of France too.
As a tutor, I am also confident to admit that I am always still a student myself. Along with teaching French and Spanish, I am currently teaching myself the basics of Japanese, and am getting into German after briefly studying it at school.
I have been a mentor for undergraduate students for 3 years, and am an active member of The Open University Student Association, after having also studied there for 2 years.
My day-to-day work currently involves a lot of teaching, mainly to professionals needing practical skills and industry-specific knowledge for the world coffee trade - my teaching is accredited by the Speciality Coffee Association too, so I am not just a language lover!
If you would like to know more about my teaching, or anything else to do with tutoring, please do get in touch! :)

Great tutor! I had Oliver at a SCA coffee course in Leeds, a passionate guy, with a huge knowledge about coffee. It's been a great experience and very helpful.
I've known Oliver for over 10 years now, and I am very lucky to be able to call him a good friend. Oliver is probably the most passionate person I know and always puts everything into his projects. He is able to strike up conversation and build relationships with everybody he crosses paths with. I would highly recommend his services because not only will you learn a substantial amount, you will also be able to enjoy his positive energy and mentality.
Oliver is an excellent tutor, with a strong foundation in both Spanish and French, having actually spent time living in both Spain and France. Over the last year he has helped me become proficient in both languages and I couldn't recommend anyone better!
Met Oliver through a close friend, he's a great guy whom I've found very patient and knowledgable! His course is really well thought out, it's structured in a much more efficient and practical way than other tutors or courses I've used in the past. Would whole heartedly recommend to anyone looking for quick progress!
You are a splendid teacher and you helped me become not only better in French but also a better human being.
Oliver was recommended to me by a friend studying French in Leeds. He’s extremely clear, patient and always willing to go that extra mile. I couldn’t ask for a better tutor! I’d reccomend Oliver without hesitation. The best language teacher I have ever had!
Oliver is a fantastic tutor. He takes the time to understand what you want out of the sessions and goes above and beyond to deliver exceptional results. It's a 10/10 service and would highly recommend learning from him.
Oliver is an amazing tutor who is extremely capable of adapting to each persons individual needs. He really helped my pronunciation and vocabulary expand!!
He is extremely patient and I’ve come away from every session feeling as if I have made great progress. Can’t recommend him enough!
