Languages have always been a passion of mine and I believe now more than ever, it is vital to develop skills in as many languages as possible. Throughout my teaching career in secondary schools in the UK, I have had vast experience of teaching French and Spanish at GCSE and A-level. I am also fully TEFL qualified and able to offer lessons in English as an Additional Language. Working with a variety of learners has ensured that I am patient, approachable and am able to mould by teaching methods to each individual student.
For me, it is incredibly important to deliver lessons that are personalised to the individual as well as being engaging and relevant. I do not believe in teaching dull lessons based on textbooks. Instead, I choose to embrace technology as much as possible by using a wide variety of resources and language learning platforms. I focus on receptive and productive skills to ensure that all those who I teach are equally confident in all four of the language skills; listening, speaking, reading and writing.
It is my mission to develop a love of language learning as deep as mine and to connect as many people from differing backgrounds and cultures. My lessons are based around the following philosophies; be passionate, allow yourself to make mistakes, don't be afraid of taking a risk! I will be there to guide you through the whole process, whether you are an absolute beginner or a pro looking to brush up on your skills!
I have been a successful secondary school leader for over 7 years, working in both inner city London schools and the Home Counties. I have experience of teaching a wide variety of students and am able to stretch my students to achieve their full potential and develop a deep love and interest of languages. I am qualified as a French and Spanish secondary school teacher but am also fully TEFL qualified and am apt at teaching English as a Second Language.
I firmly believe that languages are for everyone. We can all learn a language if we give them a go and are patient and kind to ourselves. We all make mistakes, but when learning a language, this can be so powerful! I raised the profile of languages in my last school from 20 in year 1, 54 in year 2 and 78 in year 3. I also know the tools that will allow my students to flourish in exams and can build skills in revision techniques, written structures and comprehension. I teach to the top as I believe that setting high standards are the key to success. Under my leadership 41% of students achieved A*-A and 100% A-C in French.
Many of my students have continued with their language studies up to A-level and some have gone on to university to study either French, Spanish or both, opening their world to a whole new adventure and outlook. Let me help you on your way to a whole new world of possibilities.
I teach French, Spanish and English as a second language from primary school level up to A-level through individual classes or group sessions. I also cater for adult and children lessons. I studied French at the University of Leeds and lived in Toulouse for a year where I taught English in French secondary schools. I have also travelled extensively around South America where I further developed my skills in Spanish.
As a teacher, it is fundamentally important to me that my students have sufficient time to go over content from previous sessions. This means that my lessons are based around the principals of consistency and continuity. To ensure as firm an understanding as possible, I do not move on from one topic and then to a next without ensuring that my students are as confident as they can be on a range of vocabulary and grammatical understanding . I believe that the introduction of a wide range of vocabulary is paramount to building up knowledge of different topics, but equally, I promote the idea of a firm understanding of grammar and high level structures to enable my students to talk freely about a variety of topics that we will cover.
I also want my students to develop their confidence in all four language skills, not just the spoken language. Not only does this build a more solid understanding of the language but it will also allow you to find your own linguistic strengths. We all have one!
Technology is paramount in all of my lessons. I do not believe that we develop our listening skills through listening to a tape in non native sounding speech, equally we cannot become able readers by relying solely on text books. I deliver lessons where my students are exposed to authentic, up to date and relevant material that covers listening, reading, writing and speaking in a natural way. Of course, we all have a particular linguist strength; some of us are more able writers whist others are more confident speakers. However, it is my aim to cover all 4 skills in each lesson to ensure that all those who I teach have as much exposure to the language as possible.
I also believe in having fun! For me languages bring us together and provide us with a rich history, so why make them dull?! Competition, games, music and entertainment also feature in my lessons. We learn more efficiently when we are engaged and this is incredibly important to me as a teacher.
