I prefer to teach through games and active learning rather than books and worksheets. This way children are not always aware that it is a lesson and it becomes more fun for them. Children having fun are far more likely to be engaged and retain the learning.
I am British qualified and have been teaching for 3 years in Key Stage 1 (ages 5-7). I have worked in the UK and, most recently, in the Middle East so have lots of experience with students who have English as a second language.

Multinational School Bahrain | Class Teacher | January 2017 – July 2019
In my role as class teacher at Multinational School, I taught the Western Australian curriculum. I have taught both Preparatory (5-6 year olds) and Year 1 (6-7 year olds), teaching students with the majority speaking English as an additional language. This has required me to adapt my teaching to ensure that this causes no barriers to learning; explaining vocabulary prior to teaching, using visual aids, clear articulation etc. There is a strong focus on parent-teacher communication and so I have met with and updated all parents on a regular basis during my time at Multinational School. Due to the children’s varied backgrounds, the ability level varies vastly in the class and the emotional maturity and cultural differences of the children have also been considerations when planning lessons. The year groups that I have worked in have been 3 or 4 form entry so there has been a collaborative approach to planning throughout.
In order to promote the progress of the children, I worked hard to ensure that the children are well engaged during lessons by creating fun activities and being enthusiastic and positive with the children at all times as well as ensuring that there is a focus on differentiation to make learning accessible for all. Building a rapport with the children is of high importance in order to achieve maximum academic progression along with helping guide the children socially and emotionally but also to give the children the most enjoyable educational experience possible. During my time at MNS Bahrain we have had a visit from the Bahrain Quality Authority during which I was observed and received very positive personal feedback.
John Shelton Primary School (UK) | Class Teacher | July 2016 – December 2016
I began my role at John Shelton as maternity cover for the final few weeks of the school term with the current Year 2 class. In September 2016, I took on the new Year 2 class consisting of 31 students. The academic ability at entry level of the school was very low so reading and writing was a strong focus of the school. As a one form entry school, I had the freedom to plan and teach according to my own ideas (in line with the curriculum) but there was an added responsibility with this in being unable to share ideas etc as when working within a year group team. I was fortunate to be given extensive CPD during my time at John Shelton as well as high input from my SLT member mentor as I was an NQT. My first term of the NQT position was passed successfully but I left this job as I wanted to pursue teaching abroad, I therefore have 2 terms of my NQT year to complete if I want to return to teaching in the UK.
