As a chemistry graduate, keen chess player and experienced chemical engineer, my teaching style will be to first cover the basics of the generic topic then progressively move to the more complicated techniques that will require much more reasoning.
My tactic of combining Chess lessons with the study of chemistry and chemical engineering is that the game is really a stimulus to train the mind to reason on different levels, which will allow the beneficial progression from understanding the periodic table to using it to understand chemical synthesis or understanding molecular orbitals, which would be comparable to playing three dimensional chess!
My teaching activities have been confined mainly to some 25 graduate chemical engineers who were assigned to my various teams when I practiced as a Lead Process Engineer and they were taught the actual business of oil and gas processing, which encompassed mainly chemical engineering and some chemistry. Most of these graduates have since progressed to become Lead Engineers themselves and to attain MSc's as part of their progression.
If my students are studying chemistry as a pre-requisite to gain a place at university to study for a chemical engineering degree, then I will offer them further rate reductions if I am commissioned to help get them there as well as being able to tutor them in advance of post graduate activity as a process engineer to a oil company.
Initially, I obtained a BA degree in chemistry and geology and entered the oil and gas industry, where I affliated myself with the institute of chemical engineers (IChemE). I then progressed from being a graduate chemical engineer to become first a Senior Process engineer, then progressively to a Principal and finally a Lead Process Engineer responsible for managing multi-million pound projects and dedicated teams of 8-10 engieers.
Errol has a wealth of experience in applying what he is now teaching. The is no substitute for experience.
