About the lesson
I offer worldwide academic tutoring from GCSE English Language and Literature, up to essay writing at Postgraduate level or, outside of academia, for non-native English speakers, or those who simply have an avid interest in creative writing and editing. This includes students studying at institutions worldwide, or through open university. I pride myself on providing exceptional, individually tailored support.
I deliver bespoke sessions, but writing and learning are iterative processes; my preferred teaching method is by way of workshops (one to one or group workshops) as I believe this is by far the best way to improve – it gets you writing and analysing your own work. My goal is always, of course, to enable students achieve their goals, but also to help make students aware of their own learning, allowing them to utilise and develop skills for lifelong use.
I set writing development exercises, enabling the student to produce a piece of writing before the workshop (roughly 500-1000 words), which I then edit and annotate. This allows the entirety of the workshop to be spent in analysis and improvement, rather than half of it being wasted reading.
All sessions are via webcam, using either Microsoft Teams or Zoom. The option for feedback to be sent electronically is available.
Depending on the level of study, the first session may need to be an assessment of the student's academic ability/tutoring requirements, or simply a workshop designed to build rapport and cover some fundamentals.
Workshops last 45-60 minutes. Workshop cost includes 1-2 hours editing outside of the workshop. Work to be provided for editing 2 days before the workshop. Minimum 24 hours cancellation notice required. Refunds not available. If work, or 24 hours notice of cancellation, is not provided before a workshop, that session will be forfeit. By accepting tuition, students agree to these terms and conditions.
I am also happy to undertake writing and editing tasks of any nature. The hourly fee of £45 still applies, plus travel costs if applicable. Sometimes, for larger projects, a daily rate of £250 is more suitable.

About Ross
I am a creative and critical writer and editor at the University of Gloucestershire (BA, MA). From 2022-2025 I will be undertaking a practice-led Creative Writing PhD at York St John's University. Alongside running my own writing, editing and private tutoring business, Ross Turner Academics, I founded and am the editor-in-chief of Superlative, The Short Story Literary Journal, which develops and publishes new and aspiring writers.
As a professional member of The National Association of Writers in Education (NAWE), I attend regular writing conferences and have access to the latest writing in education materials.
Additionally, I am regularly published in journals, magazines and ezines, online and in print, and provide editing services for others published in the same and similar forums.
I enjoy educating; I guest lecture on Creative Writing Courses at several colleges and universities and, amongst other qualifications listed below, have Level 5 TEFL and Level 4 Education & Training qualifications.

Perfect! Really amazing workshops, so engaging! Ross is very professional, knowledgeable great fun to work with! He has taught me a lot already, including some very helpful techniques for descriptions and writing short stories. I am learning while I am studying and improving my own writing, which I always find very fascinating. I highly recommend his classes!
- Ross's response : Beata is very committed to her work. She completes writing exercises in plenty of time and to a high standard, and is a pleasure to work with.
Perfect! I've had a fair amount of lessons so far, and benefited immensely from it. What's great about our workshops is that it is not staid academic English lessons, rather, we have worked on creative writing, blogs and even types of writing (like op-eds and short form) that I need to enhance in order to become better at my job working PR!
For me, as someone who is not new to writing, Ross has managed to really stretch my abilities and articulation, and the latter goes the long way beyond just writing.
His passion and dedication really engages you in each and every session.- Ross's response : Lana is committed to improving her writing ability in every way, sends strong, lengthy pieces for editing before workshops, and is a genuine pleasure to work with.
Perfect! We enlisted Ross' help for our son in his final year of GCSEs. Here are his words:
"Ross is particularly good with using marking constructively in a way that has helped me improve. He explained everything in a clear understandable way which reinforced my abilities and helped boost my confidence. His calm demeanour makes him easy to get on with and approachable with various questions. During the time Ross was tutoring me I improved by 4 grades in the space of 2 to 3 months and I was feeling well prepared for my exams."- Ross's response : The student is very committed, conscientious and hard-working. Work is always completed on time and to the best of their ability. They are a pleasure to work with.
Perfect! Ross has great communication skills. He is very calm and professional in his approach to tutoring. He has really helped with building confidence in the subject and has been incredibly supportive throughout.
- Ross's response : Farzana was friendly and communicative before the lesson and we easily set out goals and structure. Then the first session with the student (more of an assessment than a lesson) was very successful, enabling me to establish our benchmark so that I can plan immediate and future lessons. Again, Farzana was very helpful and keen to receive lesson prep, which I am now able to send to her in advance of future lessons to ensure they are as productive as possible.
Perfect! I am delighted to have Ross as my tutor. His support and guidance have been invaluable. I cannot recommend him highly enough.
- Ross's response : Carla is committed, hardworking and, although we have only been working together a short time, a pleasure to assist. I very much enjoy editing her work and meeting to discuss strategies and analyse feedback.

Find out more about Ross
01
When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
I have been an aspiring writer since 2007, but only discovered how much I enjoyed editing and teaching in 2017, whilst studying Creative Writing at the University of Gloucestershire. It was during my studies that I decided to become a tutor, and aspire to eventually become a professor.
02
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
Prose and essay writing and editing are my specialities, and are what I spend most of my time doing - be that editing work for my students, content and ghost writing, editing submissions for Superlative, The Short Story Literary Journal, or writing and editing my own work. I am more content writing poetry than editing it, but have almost as much experience as I do with prose.
03
Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
My undergraduate dissertation supervisor had such a vast knowledge of so many areas related to writing, editing and beyond - and a mental library so extensive I could never quite believe it - that I was inspired to expand my own knowledge and pass that experience on to others. Not only was he a superb academic, but he was incredibly patient and helpful, and I aspire to be equally as excellent a teacher.
04
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
I would say 3 things: an acute understanding of what your students actually need to achieve their goals; the patience and skills to transfer that knowledge to them; and, finally, whilst qualifications are obviously important, extensive experience and expertise in the areas you teach make the best tutors stand out, and give the best teaching value for students.
05
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.
Up until the beginning of 2017, I was employed full time by a large retail company as a General Manager - a secure, well paid position that allowed me some spare time in which I could write. And I was so bored. Leaving that job to undertake higher education studies and pursue a career in writing, editing and teaching was one of the best things I've ever done.
06
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?
One of the biggest difficulties with writing is that it is always subjective. What I like, somebody else might not. Some of the most popular novels, short stories, anything, are sometimes also the most controversial. That isn't always a bad thing, but it is definitely a hurdle I've had to overcome when faced with criticism of my own work.
07
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
I want to keep writing alive for future generations: it's a difficult skill that takes many years to develop, and that nobody will ever perfect. I try to help do this by producing my own work, providing a platform for others to have work published, and, of course, by passing on knowledge to my students.
08
What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?
Aside from everything highlighted in these interview questions and on my profile, I am available to my students whenever they need me for guidance, and am always happy to go further to provide help.
