Professional jazz pianist teaching jazz, swing, blues, funk, pop, R&B, soul, latin, rock and classical music

Methodology

Well versed in a variety of styles, I teach jazz, swing, blues, funk, pop, R&B, soul, latin, rock and classical music. My teaching method is to focus on whatever type of music the student loves most, and to work around that. I believe that many people give up their dream of playing an instrument simply because they aren’t inspired enough, so my goal is to instil a love for music, whatever that means personally for each individual student.

Lessons are fun and playful, and I’ll have you improvising and jamming within the first hour!

I teach online via Zoom or from my home near West Finchley station on the Northern line.

Ambassador

One of our best tutors! High-quality profile, qualifications verified and response guaranteed. John will plan your first lesson with care.

Experience

Originally honing my skills on the British jazz scene and playing residencies in various restaurants and bars around the country, I then went on to tour the world for the past five years playing jazz on cruise ships, hotels and festivals. I now live in London playing regularly at Ronnie Scotts, The Vortex and other jazz venues across the UK. I am currently pursuing a master’s at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Helen

Perfect! John is a very talented musician, teaching jazz piano with energy and enthusiasm. He's also a good listener and very patient which is so helpful when you're working through the theory of jazz. He offers practical tips and strategies and you come away from an online lesson with a clear plan of what to practice and how to practice it effectively. Brilliant!

Jack

Perfect! Fantastic teacher. Patient, super-talented player across multiple styles, and a genuinely nice guy. I've had several piano teachers in London before, and John has been a cut above.

Would thoroughly recommend to anyone really, no matter the level.

Excellent teacher!

Taking me from zero knowledge of the piano, over the past two years John has shown me how to recognise chord structures to the point where I can now listen to songs and play them by ear, and am playing in a band.

John helped me revive my passion for blues when I hadn't played in almost 20 years! Highly recommended.

Interview with John

QUESTION 01 | 08
When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?
John — Like many people, I didn't enjoy playing the piano when I was younger, and stopped altogether for several years. It wasn't until I discovered jazz at the age of 17 that realised music could be fun, and that I could play the music I liked. That's why I teach music in the way that I wish I had been taught, regardless of the genre.
QUESTION 02 | 08
Is there a particular type music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?
John — I'm still not sick of the 1982 Herbie Hancock 'Quartet' album, featuring a 19-year-old Wynton Marsalis. That and anything by Jurassic 5.
QUESTION 03 | 08
Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.
John — I have often seen my students have a lightbulb moment when I explain to them how the songs they know and love are all related in very simple and logical ways. When I break down how to improvise, this can also be quite a revelation. With the right direction, even beginners can start improvising straight away.
QUESTION 04 | 08
What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?
John — The Theorbo, because you can't even get it through a door. Google it.
QUESTION 05 | 08
What are your keys to success?
John — Find what you love. It doesn't need to be any more complicated than that. If you love the music, that's all the motivation you'll ever need. This is why I am always talking to my students about what they have been listening to, and what it is they like about it.
QUESTION 06 | 08
Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.
John — Bill Evans, J.S. Bach, Questlove. Imagine the banter!
QUESTION 07 | 08
Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.
John — One of the most important things I've ever heard was during a masterclass with pianist Kenny Werner. Someone asked a question about how to deal with laziness. His response was: "you're not lazy, you're just overwhelmed".
QUESTION 08 | 08
What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?
John — I often send YouTube clips to my students if I think they might like or learn from them, and make joint collaborative playlists so that we can share music back and forth. I also send personalised videos between lessons if the student needs something explaining.
