For complete beginners on the oboe, I usually start with long tones to build up stamina, improve on breath control and help develop correct embouchure. Scales and arpeggios are also a common feature of my lessons as these are the fundamental building blocks of music and oboe playing. Scales are very important help the student to remember the fingerings of different notes and help improve sound and finger technique as well.
For intermediate students, I do all the above but focus more on the repertoire that they are currently working on for an upcoming assessment or performance. I usually spend more time on musicality - developing the student's stylistic ideas on different periods of music and also other aspects of technique such as articulation and dynamics.
I studied oboe performance at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and graduated in 2017 with a distinction for my Masters of Music degree. Apart from performing, I have taught oboe students ranging from 7 to 53 years old in over five years of teaching experience. Over time, I have gained significant experience in helping students of different ages and standards overcome technical difficulties, thereby significantly improving their playing. I have taught students one-on-one and also in groups.
To date, three of my students have done ABRSM examinations. Two of them (grades 3 and 5) were awarded a distinction and one (grade 3) was awarded a merit.
I am generally quite flexible with my schedule as I am a freelancer, so if a student needs to change the date or time of lesson, I am usually able to do so to accommodate my student's timetable. However, I require at least 24 hours notice beforehand, otherwise the full hour's lesson will still be charged.
If the student travels to my house, my rate is £40/hour.
If I travel to my student's house, my rate is £46/hour. I do not drive yet, so if I travel to my student's house, his/her house will have to be within walking distance to a tube station.
