Every student is an individual, with their own learning style and their own ambition. From young people with dreams of a stellar professional career, to those wishing to have an enjoyable pastime. I am used to working with a wide spectrum of students, and tailoring learning to suit their needs.
I am happy to take students through the grade system, as a way of measuring progress and having the qualifications to help further their education. I am also happy to teach people how to play without the need to take exams. I embed music theory into the sessions in small doses, so that it becomes a part of the learning process, rather than a separate subject that can become a scary barrier. And for those who want to learn more about theory or need to take an exam, I am able to teach the subject as stand alone sessions.
Great technique is at the heart of good playing, and forms a reliable basis from which to express your creativity. If you don’t have to think about technique, all of your thinking can be used to perform whatever you want, how you want.
Most of all, music is fun, and learning about music needs to be fun as well.
I feel very fortunate to have been able to have a professional career in the music industry for almost 40 years. During this time I have recorded and toured with well known artistes, as well as playing down the pub with local bands.
The artistes I have worked with include Cliff Richard (see the YouTube video with Cliff at Wembley Stadium when I had hair), Howard Jones, Dexys Midnight Runners, Shakin’ Stevens and many more. This has included many TV and video appearances. I am currently working with the legendary Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band, as well as a great folk rock band called Feast of Fiddles, featuring six of the best folk fiddle players in the business, and a Pink Floyd tribute called Pulse.
Teaching is something I truly love doing. In fact I have taught throughout most of my career, including private instrumental tuition since 1987, as a woodwind peripatetic teacher for Oxfordshire County Music Service, and lecturing at Reading College in all areas of contemporary music, for nine years.

A focused, professional and reliable individual, my achievements in my career so far are testament to both my commitment and ability. As a teacher I am able to motivate both groups and individuals, lead a staff team, manage cohorts well, work well under pressure, and have helped to considerably improve standards within the departments I have worked. As a musician my commitment to my profession is absolute.
