I am a practicing visual artist, community arts worker and educator working with and teaching across a variety of media including; painting, drawing and illustration, mixed media and collage, graphic design, digital photography and film making. I am a visual arts graduate and studied an MA in participatory and community arts at Goldsmiths College. I provide both practical and academic tutoring in a number of arts related subjects, for school, further education and higher education students as well as adult learners.
I am a friendly and relaxed arts tutor with a good sense of humour and a strong belief that learning should be fun. I like to involve my students as much as possible in their own learning, facilitating a two-way interactive process enabling the student to take ownership of their own learning plan. I like to spend the first session with my students discussing their individual needs and goals, and deciding together on the best way to structure their learning to give them the best possible chance of producing their best work. I am a patient and understanding tutor, with a real passion and enthusiasm for my subject matter and a strong desire to help my students succeed.
I have worked in various community arts and educational settings for 10 years, facilitating arts teaching sessions across a wide range of ages, abilities and backgrounds to hundreds of students. In addition to one-to-one tutoring students at their own homes, I have also taught in schools, libraries, galleries, museums, community centres, health & social care settings, charities, youth groups, refugee centres and prisons. I believe this experience has provided me with a strong grounding and flexibility in teaching techniques, enabling me to cater my methods to the specific needs of each individual student. In my academic tutoring at both GCSE and A-Level, I am proud to say I have never had a student achieve less than a grade C. I have also worked with several undergraduate students to help them develop and improve on their practice during their degree courses.
I may charge extra for travel depending on the distance and costs incurred to travel to your location. Additional costs also incurred for additional tutees, if lessons are for more than one student at a time. All rates negotiable with the client.
I am able to provide a PDF of my professional artist CV on request.
Alex tutored me over the final months of my A Level art and I achieved a Grade C due to his support with my portfolio. He explained a method that was useful towards making my work move forward in the right direction towards my final piece, while giving ideas out that would solve problems I had in places.
