The first thing I do is to listen to my fellow students. I give them time to talk about the specific concepts they are struggling with, or whatever they need to talk about that will help me understand their situation. Then, I answer questions that they have, and if they need it I'll teach (I'll even give full lectures if they're okay with that). My goal is to get them to understand concepts that they think are impossible. The only way to do that, I believe, is to understand their learning strengths and motivations. I want their experiences to be as personalized as possible.
I am a sophmore student at Newman International Academy of Arlington. I was born in Nigeria, and lived there for about 9 years of my life. I hated math back there; I guess it was too hard for me. I came to the United States 5 or 6 years ago; I started school and decided that I loved math. I have been tutoring basically everything at my school (I'm the smart one according to my friends), but I really like algebra; I don't know why, but I just love it. I've been helping tutor with my ex-math-teacher Mr. Marlar for 3 years. Over the years, I have gotten As in every math class I've taken. I have helped some students understand concepts that they thought were impossible and pass quarter exams. I want other students to be able to understand math the way I do. It is a blessing to understand math because it makes the road a lot smoother. Trust me, like I said, I didn't always understand math; it took a while, and I'm still learning. You can too.
