Initial sessions tend to be focused on the clarification of a clients goals, determining realistic short term actions between then and the next session, and sometimes beyond.
Following this, accountability partners are discussed, with the coaching goal being to encourage you (as the client) to commit to an action. If you can't commit to an action and be held accountable you are not changing your behaviour, and therefore are unlikely to complete your goal.
Regrading accountability, it can be as simple as asking the client if that action took place. If you know someone is going to ask about whether you completed an action, and that someone is a person you respect, then there's plenty of motivation to complete the action and in turn not having to tell them that you didn't do it. The intent is not to shame or berate clients for not completing an action, more that human nature means no one really wants to be seen as a person who doesn't stick to their word.
As my relationship with the client builds, we will work together to clarify and justify existing goals, and what's kept you from accomplishing this goal without assistance. This is to help you see where your current thought process may be working against you.
Personally, I find it is most effective to understand why my client isn't feeling motivated to achieve a goal in the first place, to then put a plan in place which includes accountability.
There is also indirect accountability, such as being held accountable by other trusted friends or colleagues. Although your focus/goal may appear to change over time, it is my responsibility to keep you focused on your overall goal.
Your trusted friends and colleagues often have your best interests at heart, but they're also emotionally involved in your decision making process. I choose to work alongside this, helping you see the wood for the trees, and realigning you with your goal when necessary.
Finally, if a client does accomplish their goal I am always keen to celebrate this. This also aids in encouraging you and confirming accountability.
I hope this helps you understand a little about how I work.
