« Where do I start with the amazing Deborah. I had a real hard time with the whole IELTS test experience. It took me 12 attempts to score 7 or above in each subject on the same day. I sat these 12 tests over a period of a year and a half so as you can imagine I was very frustrated. I did have another tutor from Superprof who was my tutor for 7 months, his name is Lewis Richards. Over the 7 months my scores improved on each subject except for the writing. In that 7 months not once did my writing score change from a 6.5 with Lewis's help. I found Lewis's lessons very repetitive and realised he actually was reducing my confidence. I got to see a very unprofessional side of Lewis which Forced me to make a official complaint against him. I knew I needed a new teacher and found Deborah on here. Choosing Deborah as my tutor was the single best decision I made with my IELTS journey. We had lessons over a 4 week period and in that time I learned a whole new approach to the IELTS test. Deborah actually taught me, and structured all my lessons specifically to me personally and my weak areas. This had a dramatic effect on improving my ability in writing and helped me gain my confidence back I had lost. I felt Deborah set high expectations for me and this was crucial is getting me out of the 6.5 band I had been scoring in so many writing tests. In 4 short weeks with Deborah's help I finally scored above 7 in every subject including writing, something I couldn't achieve prior to this. I would highly recommend deborah to anyone looking to improve the skills she teaches, and I'm grateful I found her on this website. I can now move on with my visa and this is all thanks to Deborah's fantastic teaching. »

MA,QTLS, PGCE, TEFL, Course Director, English Language Tutor, IELTS (Academic, General and IELTS Life Skills for Visa purposes) EFL All levels, IGCSE SKYPE NAME: live:.cid.a15da9e1b3b55e02

Methodology

I focus on what you don't know and build up from there. In my book, there is never an unteachable student, only an unteachable teacher. After an initial discussion by skype or phone, I work out a lesson plan and time period to suit you. At the end of the lesson, I ask you to reflect on what you have learned. This is for me. I need to know that I have done my job correctly. I'm also honest about what I feel you can achieve in the time you've allotted me.

Ambassador

One of our best tutors! High-quality profile, qualifications verified and response guaranteed. Deborah will plan your first lesson with care.

Experience

Most importantly, I try to find out what you want to achieve. I've taught many foreign professionals, including high ranking government foreign officials, businessmen, and women, who require a 6 in IELTS and are understandably worried. The exam is difficult but I have devised a technique that will alleviate some of the strain. I'm currently teaching an A-level student, who needs to get a good mark for her future law placement. As it's linguistically based, I focus on her weak areas, which is grammar. Her first question to me was about a clause. 'What is it?' I took it from there and devised my first lesson on clauses, after all, they include most of the lexis. By lesson three, she was not only recognising clauses but able to point out the noun, adjective, and adverbial phrases. As a course director for a language school, I have to devise curriculums for summer school and teachers, so I'm used to being creative. I've taught GCSE to adults, AQA, with a 90% success rate. I've taught entry level, students who couldn't speak a word. In my spare time, when I have any, I write. I used to teach writing and illustrating, as I have five published children's books under my belt. Some are in their third edition. Language is everything to me, and there is nothing more fulfilling than inspiring confidence.

I met Deborah on the internet when looking for a tutor for my teenage son. He spent 2 weeks in the UK with the main purpose being to improve his english as a foreign language. 4 hours a day one-to one lessons provided by Deborah gave my son a great deal of confidence . He made a considerable progress in all his english skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) within a very short period of time. We found Deborah to be a friendly tutor being able to encourage her students to reach their potential.

Absolutely recommend Deborah to anyone looking to strengthen their weaknesses, leave every session with a growing confidence and actually make solid, noticeable progress even after 1 tutoring lesson.

Highly recommend! Helped me so much!

Thank you again!

Interview with Deborah

QUESTION 01 | 08
Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?
Deborah — I was born in England, so naturally English is my first language, however I would say in terms of linguistic interests, when my parents decided to immigrate to South Africa, I too had to learn another language. In fact, my first friend at the tender age of ten could speak no English at all and much to our parent's amazement, we became the best of friends.

Over-coming language barriers has always been an interest of mine and I know first-hand that the biggest barrier is confidence. I took this further in my early twenties when writing early readers and attending meetings at publishers who explained how to write with translation in mind as some African languages do not have something as simple as prepositions. In addition, I found myself immersed in the syntactic development of writing for children and how the subtext is equally important. This in turn influenced my teaching practice and the importance of context in learning English.
QUESTION 02 | 08
Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?
Deborah — part from the most obvious being our Queen, I would be remiss if I didn't mention our plethora of literary icons and as a children's author, I would have to refer to Harry Patter whose permanence is entrenched on the wall of Kings Cross. What is so fantastic about our culture is the physical connection to these icons, from The Charles Dickens Museum, which used to be his permanent home to author JM Barrie whose scene of Peter Pan's childhood escape from the window near Kensington Gardens is still there. Of course, there is also the Bronte sisters in Haworth West Yorkshire, not to mention Jane Austen in Chawton near Winchester and the ineffable character of Mr Darcy. However, our language would not be what it is today without Shakespeare. Without his introduction of fifteen thousand extra words, some he invented others he merged from existing words or anglicised from foreign languages, our vocabulary would not be as rich as it is today.

From the simplest idiomatic phrases like, 'in a pickle,' or she waited 'with bated breath,' or found yourself led on 'a wild goose chase,' after being struck by the 'green-eyed monster,' all came from him. He even invented the knock-knock joke in a Scottish play. As some of you might know, idioms are part of our language and not for the 'faint-hearted.'
QUESTION 03 | 08
Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?
Deborah — Our sense of humour and laughing at everyday life, laden with ironic inuendo's and exaggeration. It is often quite difficult to spot for a second language learner and quite fun to teach using non-verbal clues of tone and expression.

A few examples would be, 'I'm really happy for you,' or 'good for you,' when you're clearly not happy, or 'so you do know how to answer your phone?'
QUESTION 04 | 08
Why does speaking this language matter to you?
Deborah — It is a means of identity, and although I am British, I find there are more shared values than separate ones, which for me makes communication far more interesting.
QUESTION 05 | 08
What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?
Deborah — As I stressed before, confidence and contextual understanding. Universally, all language stands for that intrinsic expression of culture, the words themselves communicating that countries values, beliefs and traditions.
QUESTION 06 | 08
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.
Deborah — I can only relate this to my experience in South Africa, and how rote learning in terms of pronunciation, grammar, and comprehension without the basic cultural understanding of the language does not work. I managed to pass my exams but in terms of speaking, I was at a complete loss mostly because I did not understand the underlying nuances. This in turn damaged my confidence. I suppose, you could say that I'm far more understanding because of this and place a great deal of emphasis on context when teaching. To quote an over-used phrase - Knowledge is power.
QUESTION 07 | 08
How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?
Deborah — I have travelled quite a bit in my life and during this period I always like to speak to the local community and gain an insight into their culture, which helps when teaching.
QUESTION 08 | 08
8) What makes you a Superprof in language?
Deborah — My intrinsic love of language, communicating ideas and of course the satisfaction that comes when a student overcomes all barriers to learning.
