My initial assessment is to understand the student's concerns and areas for improvement. They will sit a GCSE paper so I can see their thought process and identify the key areas to work on (hopefully these areas tie in with the student's own areas for improvements).
Generally I would explain the subject area, work together through a number of examples with increasing complexity and than give some questions for the pupil to attempt. Homework and summary sheets will be provided.
I have privately tutored maths to several students and many family members. Most students improved by 2 grades. I am a qualified actuary and within the commercial world I constantly spent my time explaining complex ideas in a clear way. I enjoy maths and find it totally rewarding when students grasp a topic and start enjoying maths too. I am hard working and determined to support a student to achieve their maximum potential.
My qualifications are:
Fellow Actuary with the Institute of Actuaries (FIA)
MSc in Medical Statistics
1st Class BSc hons in Mathematics
3 "A" levels in Maths, Chemistry and Biology
A in AS Maths
8 "O" levels
