I have been teaching students with learning difficulties and disabilities in Further Education in London since 2006 and consider my experience as an Arts teacher very valuable while teaching Maths, as it allows me to explore alternative teaching approaches that cater for all learning styles.

I attended the BA in Mathematics / BA in Geology during 3 years at the same University, before doing an internal transfer to Performing Arts in 1987.

- How much do you charge?

I usually charge £35 per hour/lesson - the price may vary depending on the travel - and £30/hour for online teaching.

For the first lesson (a consultation and taster) - I only charge for the travel.
For group lessons, the price is negotiable according to the number of students.

- Where do you teach?

I usually teach at the students' home or company/work space.
I live in Newham/London and work part-time in Hammersmith & Fulham, so I'm willing to travel as far as Greenwich, Lewisham, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Islington, City of London, Camden, Hammersmith and Fulham, Kensington & Chelsea, and Westminster.

- When are you available?

I am now available during day and evening times from Monday to Friday, including school/college breaks. I am also usually available during 3-4 weeks in theSummer break.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach adults (Portuguese, Hatha Yoga) and children from Key Stage 1 to GCSE (Maths), including English/Literacy to Key Stage 1.
When teaching individuals within the Autism Spectrum, I usually request the presence of the parent/carer during the session, specially in the beginning, in order to establish a good communication and interaction system.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I can use FaceTime or Skype for tutoring online.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Brazilian Portuguese - I have been teaching in private tuitions and also in language schools, usually for adult learners and in 2015 I started teaching a student who owns a company where most of the employees are Portuguese or Brazilian. Although he started learning Portuguese language because he wanted to be able to communicate more efficiently with them, the lessons also became a very pleasant pastime after he developed confidence in his language skills. It's been a pleasure to witness the student's progress.

Maths - For a few years now, I have been teaching a 12 years old student who needed help to improve his Maths results at school. Although he loves most of Maths' topics and is very dedicated to his studies, he needed specialist support to improve his attention skills and confidence. Along the last 2 years, having had weekly tuitions, he has significantly improved his results, which has helped him feel more confident and motivated and the parents are also very happy with his progress.

Yoga for Autism - I have been a Yoga and Meditation Practitioner for more than 25 years. The regular practice of Hatha Yoga - followed later by Iyengar Yoga - and Buddhist Meditation, have helped me in many levels, from the physical and mental to the spiritual. During my experience of 7 years working with young adults within the Autism Spectrum for the National Autistic Society as Dance & Drama teacher, I had the pleasure to discover how much the practice of certain yoga poses was successful in the process of developing communication skills, confidence and self-esteem.

Background

I am a qualified Performing Arts teacher who has also been teaching Maths in private tuitions for more than 25 years. I have been teaching students with learning difficulties and disabilities in Further Education in London since 2006 and consider my experience as an Arts teacher very valuable while teaching Maths, as it allows me to explore alternative teaching approaches that cater for all learning styles. I plan every lesson considering the student’s Individual needs and expectations.

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have more than 25 years experience in teaching Performing Arts in Primary and Secondary Schools. Since moving to London in 1998, I have been teaching in Special Needs Education (Secondary Schools) and Inclusive Learning (Furher Education). My last/present position is Lecturer in the Inclusive Learning Department at the Ealing, West London & Hammersmith College, working with learners within the Autism Spectrum, Down Syndrome and PMLD.

As a native Brazilian/Italian and qualified language teacher, I have bee teaching Portuguese as a Foreign Language in London, in Language schools such as Língua Direta and BERLITZ, as well as in private tuition to individuals and companies since 1998. I have also been preparing students for the GCSE and A Level Portuguese.

As a Yoga Practitioner with more than 25 years experience, I started teaching Yoga during the 7 years working with young adults within the Autism Spectrum for the National Autistic Society and have continued doing so until the present in association with Yoga4Autism.

Before choosing to graduate in Performing Arts - Teaching Qualification - in Brazil, I had completed 3 years studying at the Faculty of Mathematics and Geology and at that time I started working as a Maths tutor, preparing students for the exams required to enter university. For that reason I feel confident teaching Maths. Since moving to London, where I have been teaching Dance and also carried on teaching Maths in private tuition, I have always felt very motivated to think out of the box while exploring the most effective teaching techniques for the different learning styles - specially the kinaesthetic - in order to provide a unique experience for every one of my students.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes, I have an updated DBS Certificate. I have the subscription to the DBS Certificate – Update Service renewed every year.

Having initially opted for focusing on scientific subjects – especially those related to Mathematics - at Secondary School and Further Education, I had always been attracted to Performing Arts since I started studying Ballet Classic at an early age. Eventually, Dance and Acting became my main career choices when I chose to focus on exploring different levels of non-verbal communication and movement as self-expression. That mix of interests led me to take part in educational projects that linked Maths and Dance later on in my professional life.

“It's great to have finally found a Tutor that is enthusiastic about language and that has a great teaching method. I am really happy to be finally on my way to learning a second language.”

“Emilia is gentle and her calm demeanour influences whoever is around her. She used Hady's favourite characters to get him started with phonics and spelling. That helped improving Hady's concentration level while preparing him to start Reception. She's in tune with the child's needs and would change up activities whenever the need arised; whenever Hady lost concentration, they would move through Dance or Yoga. Both Hady and I thoroughly enjoyed and looked forward to those sessions.”

“Emilia is a fantastic teacher. She's so knowledgable, has a brilliant style, is kind, patient and really helped me to progress with my Portuguese at my own pace. I would recommend her in a heartbeat”
