My approach is, at its core, to understand the specific needs of each individual student. I aim to build a trusting and relaxed, but professional, relationship both with my students and their parents/carers. This is with the aim of fostering a positive environment in which the learning and retention of new concepts comes naturally. I have experience of teaching students with a wide variety of learning styles and educational backgrounds.
A typical hour long lesson will involve:
-covering core concepts that are required for understanding the topic(s)
-clear, worked examples that are relevant to the curriculum or exam
-time to practice, and reflect on, approaches or techniques to questions
-use of memory quizzes, flashcards or other learning aids
-questions or problems that use the topics in a real-world context
-time for summing up our learning at the end
Appropriate tasks to consolidate learning will be left to complete in the students own time.
I am well organised and have a wide variety of resources at my disposal, and will tailor these to the specific needs of each student. I will keep a detailed record of the topics that we have covered and homework that has been left, to ensure we cover the full breadth of the mathematics curriculum.
For those students that are working towards qualifications, our lessons will also cover exam technique, question-specific approaches, working on the ability to read and understand questions, and how to extract the information needed to answer each question.
I am a qualified maths teacher holding a PGCE from the University of Brighton, with two years teaching experience. I have been tutoring for the past 3 years towards the National 5 & Higher qualifications, along with GCSE & IGCSE.
I have a high success rate, with some major success stories of helping students vastly increase their confidence, mathematical skills and conceptual understanding.
I am currently looking for tutees starting in August/September 2018 in time for the new school year.
