When at the age of 12 back in the USSR I took my first English tuition lessons, all I really wanted was to improve my pronunciation. And then I ended up with English being a major part of my entire life: I now live and work in England and it is my son's native language. Whatever reason you have for taking on Russian - you will most likely gain even more! I will match my teaching style to your individual needs and this can be discussed and mutually agreed at our initial session.
I am passionate about my country and my language! There is no better time to build bridges between Russia and UK through celebrating our differences.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
Currently I teach English to the Russian speakers in UK, as well as Russian as a foreign language to a wide number of tutees of various backgrounds: Polish, Norwegian, Brazilian, Finnish, Italian and English of course!
- Tell me about your qualifications.
BA in English/German and Literature (Russia)
MA in Linguistics and Language Teaching (The University of York
PG Dip in Interpreting and Translating For International Business (University of Bradford)
PGCE Secondary Modern Languages (University of Bradford)
Further and Adult Education Teachers' Certificate (Teaching Practice Stage One) City and Guilds
Certificate in Methods of Teaching Russian as a Foreign Language for Children (Moscow State University)
- How much do you charge?
I charge £30 per 60 min lesson.
My availability varies, depending on a number of students and teaching commitments I get, therefore I encourage my new tutees to book and schedule a block of 10 lessons. This enables your learning process to be structured and continued, which is so crucial for any language learning.
- Where do you teach?
I prefer to teach from my home in BD18 but this can be negotiated.
- When are you available?
My availability varies, depending on a number of students and teaching commitments I get, therefore I encourage my new tutees to book and schedule a block of 10 lessons.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I worked with students aged 4 to 65 :-) I adapt my teaching approach to each individual: old souls and those young at heart too! :-)
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I prepare for GCSE and A-level exams, act as an examiner for the Speaking element, and assist with interpreting and translating.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I have some online teaching experience: mainly Skype, but also tutor agencies` educational platforms. I personally quite enjoy this set up as I get to know people from different parts of the country and it is particularly handy when this country is gridlocked due to snow! :-)
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I think that learning a new language is an amazing opportunity to live a second (additional!) life in this lifetime. It gives you a different perspective onto your established beliefs and opens a door to a new world of culture, knowledge and mentality. Who would have known that picking up extra tuition lessons in English to improve my pronunciation at the age of 12 would take me to a new life: I now live and work in England and English is my son's native language!
I worked across community education (evening courses for adults) and secondary level education (mostly grammar schools) since 2000 teaching Russian as a foreign language. I have experience in teaching Russian at all levels, from complete beginners for fun or business, to exam preparation and reading Russian Literature in original. I specialize is teaching Russian to Russian bilingual children in England.
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have been working in the higher education sector since 2003 as a project officer and events coordinator. However, I also worked across community and secondary level education since 2000 teaching both English and Russian as a foreign language: English to Asian ladies and asylum seekers from all over the world, and Russian to private school pupils, at the evening community programmes and to my private students of various backgrounds and walks of life.
I always customise the programme and resources to each individual learner. At an initial half price session we will establish your learning style, previous exposure to languages and your desired outcomes the tuition with me.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
- Tell me about some of your current students.
I thoroughly enjoy my wide range of students: they are curious, open minded, courageous and adventurous! They take on the challenges of the Russian language and mentality, they may struggle but do not give up, they go to Russia, they marry Russians, they analyse Russian deep literature. I learn about my own Motherland through my students' eyes and for that I am eternally grateful to them!
