A few words from me
Before my family moved from Shenzhen, China to Brno, Czech Republic in November 2017, I had worked as a freelance Chinese teacher. I am a happy mother of two lovely kids. We have a cute Golden Retriever puppy.
Shenzhen, as called the Silicon Valley in China, is a young and modern city. Due to the dynamic technology and economy development, many foreigners came to Shenzhen to work and live. This gave me opportunities of providing my teaching service to students from different cultural backgrounds. I have had students from US, UK, The Czech Republic, Japan, South Korea, Gabon, Tahiti....Besides doing what I enjoy doing, which is teaching, I have obtained new experiences by teaching people from different cultures. I am so lucky to make friends from all over the world.
As a student from a different culture, you may find Chinese learning difficult, especially when you are thinking how on the earth can you one day understand and write those crazy characters. I admit that writing Chinese surely involves your hard work, but Chinese grammar does not have so many rules such as single or plural changes in nouns, there is no past time, present or future time of verbs, there is no cases. We just use infinitive all the time. To make a sentence we just put words in an order of subject, verb and object.... So, in the view of grammar, Chinese is much easier compared with European languages. Of course the tones in Mandarin!! When discussing about the tones, I always remind my students that Chinese is a language for a country with such a huge size as the whole Europe. It means it has to be tolerable enough for people with different dialects and accents from the North (imagine Chinese Finland) and people from the South (imagine Chinese Greece) to communicate with one single language - the Mandarin. Actually when these two peoples speak Mandarin with their own accents or incorrect tones, they just amazingly understand each other. Because they learn to judge by the contexts when hearing an incorrect tone. As a foreigner, your Chinese friend would understand you by your context if you pronounced an incorrect tone in your sentence, provided that you used the correct words and sentence. But it does not mean I encourage you to ignore the tones. Our goal is always to be perfect in grammar and pronunciation as well!
I studied English and am learning Czech language now. So, I know your feeling. I encourage you to speak out and make mistakes. I am always willing to help you, by explaining what and why it was wrong and how to correct it. I will always treat you as a friend and you will find your confidence in my class.
