« Rachael has taught all three of my children over the last five years, and I couldn't have hoped for a better teacher. Her mixture of patience and love of music has really inspired them all, and they all enjoy and look forward to their lessons immensely. She has tailored her teaching to their different personalities to get the most out of them, and she just seems to get the different ways they approach the piano. My oldest son won a music scholarship to Trinity, which was undoubtedly due to Racha »

Rachael - Balham - Music

Methodology

I have been teaching for over 15 years and am an experienced solo and chamber music performer. I am a confident and enthusiastic teacher with an excellent knowledge of the solo piano repertiore and of exam requirements.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach Piano and Music Theory. I am also available for GCSE and A-level tuition.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

BMus (Performance) - from Otago University in New Zealand
Trinity Advanced Performance Certificate

- How much do you charge?

Charges for lessons taken at my studio are provided above.

- Where do you teach?

I teach out of my home which is about 5 minutes walk from Balham Tube and Overland.

- When are you available?

I teach Monday to Friday 10am-9pm and Saturday 9am-12pm. Availability is discussed on inquiry.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach all ages (children and adults alike) and all levels from beginner through to advanced. From grade 1-8 through to the diploma level exams.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Playing the piano is such an important part of my life, it fills me with joy (and sometimes frustration!), but it is a real privilege to share my knowledge with others and help them discover their own musical creativity. Whatever your reason for learning, whether for fun or for exams, I will work with you to achieve the desired results.

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have over fifteen years experience of private piano teaching. I have had students gain distinction marks at grade 5 through to grade 8 piano and beyond. I have had students audition for and be accepted, with full music scholarship, to prestigious London music schools. I teach over 40 students per week.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I have an up-to-date DBS and PL insurance

- Where and with whom did you train?

I studied performance piano with Kemp English, one of New Zealand's leading concert performers, at Otago University, New Zealand

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM) the UK's professional association for musicians and music teachers.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I have over 50 students ranging in age from 6 to 66. Some learn for fun or to play tunes that appeal to them. Others are learning so that they can sit and progress through the piano examination system. I have had a number of students gain distinction grade passes at grade 8 level and above. I also have students who audition for, and gained music scholarships at various prestigious London schools including Trinity School.

As an adult beginner I've found Rachael's lesson's to be encouraging and inspirational, with just the right amount of rigour to keep me moving forward at a good pace. As I've progressed to higher grades I've come to appreciate more fully the depth of her knowledge and how well she tailors her teaching to the individual student.

Rachael is a very friendly teacher and her lessons are well organised. My daughter has really progressed since starting with her over a year ago and really enjoys the lessons. I have also started taking lessons as a complete beginner. Rachael has been thorough in teaching me the basics of reading music, she is also very patient and I am enjoying learning with her. I would definitely recommend her to budding pianists of all ages.
