I am a professional science tutor, specialising in tutoring A-level Biology for students wishing to study Medicine or Dentistry. I am married to an Anaesthetist and we have 2 children.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I predominantly teach A-level Biology, but am happy to tutor GCSE/IGCSE sciences if I have availability.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I graduated from Newcastle University with a BSc in Medical Microbiology and Immunology (First). I then went on to complete an MRes in Medical and Molecular Biosciences (Distinction) and a PhD in Molecular Biology.
- How much do you charge?
For 2018/2019 my fees are £30 per hour for GCSE and £36 per hour for A-level. It is sometimes more appropriate for A-level students to have 1 hour 30 minute lessons, the charge for this would be £45.
- Where do you teach?
I predominantly teach online as I have two children. However, I am able to tutor in-person on a case-by-case basis.
- When are you available?
All after-school and weekend slots from September 2018 are now fully booked.
Lessons are still available between 9.30am - 3pm Monday to Friday (term time only).
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach mainly A-level students, but am more than happy to teach GCSE/IGCSE if I have availability.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I prepare students for GCSE/IGCSE and A-level exams.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
Tutoring takes place via Skype, with all lesson materials e-mailed to the student in advance of the lesson. Other than a computer with a good internet connection, microphone and webcam, no other equipment is necessary. Headphones are useful, but not essential.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Luck favours the prepared mind!
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have tutored all ages and abilities, but specialise in tutoring A-Level Biology. Most of my students go on to study Medicine, Biosciences or Physiotherapy at university. My husband is an anaesthetist, therefore I have insight into medical school applications and exams.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have a full enhanced DBS certificate and I am registered for the update service.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
I specialise in tutoring students who wish to study Medicine, Dentistry or Biosciences at university.
• BSc Medical Microbiology and Immunology (First)
• PhD Molecular Biology
• Full, enhanced DBS check (registered for update service)
Dr Rachel has been a tutor for our son for the past 4 weeks. Since our son has been having 1-1 Skype Biology lesson once a week, his knowledge and confidence has significantly increased. Dr Rachel`s approach and constant support with weekly materials, has enabled our son to catch up with his A`level Biology lessons. Dr Rachel is very well organised, friendly and patient. We cannot thank her enough.
Very knowledgeable, well organised and an excellent tutor.Prompt to teaching lessons and friendly.Makes good preparation prior to the lesson.
My daughter is really pleased with the teaching for her A level. Highly recommended.
Rachel is an extremely conscientious tutor. She prepares for every lesson, without fail, and focuses not only on the content of the course but the vital skill of exam technique. She can explain more complex topics and make them very understandable for students. Rachel also knows when to include further information to aid understanding and is a very reliable and genuinely nice person. Fully recommend.
