piano and violin tutor
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach piano and violin. (Music theory up to Grade 5).
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a Grade 7 distinction in ABRSM pianoforte. I am Grade 8 level on the violin and Diploma level on the piano.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £40 per hour for violin and £40 for piano. I charge £20 for 30 minute lessons. All lessons must be paid for upfront on a monthly basis. I am flexible with methods of payment.
- Where do you teach?
I teach from home only.
- When are you available?
I'm available for teaching Tuesday-Saturday between 10.00am-7.00pm. My office hours are 9am-5pm. If you contact me outside of these times, please leave a message and I will get back to you within 24 hours. Sundays and Mondays are my days off so I generally don't respond to messages on these days. My holidays generally coincide with school holidays.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach beginners and intermediates aged 6 and upwards. My youngest student is 6 and my eldest student is 70+.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I prepare students for the ABRSM exams. These go from Grade 1-8. To date every pupil I have entered for these exams has achieved a merit or above. I am pretty flexible with my lessons so if a student is more interested in jazz, rock, popular musicals or composition then I prepare the lessons accordingly. Everyone is an individual so I find having an open-minded approach works best.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I truly believe that every individual has the ability to learn an instrument. All it takes is time and dedication, if the passion is there then the rest will follow.
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have many years experience of playing piano and violin for my own pleasure and several years of teaching experience. At school and college I played violin in the Somerset County Youth Orchestra then went on to join the Somerset County Orchestra. I have for some years now sang soprano with the Somerset Chamber Choir and have both played and sang at Wells Cathedral on numerous occasions. I have done session work on violin with a number of bands and singer-songwriters based in London. I used to play violin and accordion in the London based alt-folk-pop band 6 Day Riot. I play with the Sutton Symphony Orchestra and I released my own solo EP under the name Curtzon in 2018.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
- Where and with whom did you train?
I learnt classical piano from aged 9. On the violin I started learning Suzuki method from age 10. After about 5 years taught by this method I changed to classical violin lessons. These were taught in a more classically structured way. The Suzuki violin method is great for enhancing memory, playing by ear and improving general musicality but it does have the disadvantage of not preparing students for sight-reading, scales and orchestra playing. Alongside classical training I also took a keen interest in folk music, playing in and setting up several folk groups whilst at school and attending Easter Folk Schools run by Folk South West.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
I teach such a variety of ages and standards on the piano and violin its difficult to cover everything on here. My youngest pupil is 6 and is a complete beginner, my oldest pupil is in his seventies and is working towards his grade 4 piano. He started with me when he was Grade 1 level and has worked hard to get to where he is today. I have experience of teaching students with special needs. More specifically those who are profoundly deaf and also students on the autistic spectrum. Currently I have a 6 year old autistic boy whom I travel to teach in his own home every week. It is such a joy to teach such a variety of students, all of whom have abilities and talents in many different areas.

Rachel has been teaching piano to my two boys, ages 9 and 8, for just over a year now. They have improved tremendously in that time frame and have also enjoyed their time with her and the positive encouragement and reinforcement that she gives them. She has a wonderful manner with the children, combining solid teaching of the fundamentals of piano, with a caring and positive approach, instilling confidence at every stage. We are really pleased with the children's progress with Rachel.
Rachel is a kind and patient teacher and our 14 year old granddaughter always enjoys her violin lessons, and has made good progress in Rachel's care. In a recent Grade examination, Rachel was most supportive and encouraging, providing her with the necessary, and reassuring, piano accompaniment to her set pieces. Rachel has helped our granddaughters self confidence, and so enhanced her enjoyment of playing.
Rachel is a very friendly and approachable lady, she teaches my 2 children piano lessons. She has great patience and understanding but knows how to get her point across. She always shows great professionalism and is a wonderful teacher. She comes to my home to teach my kids and we always have a natter before the lessons.
