Interview with Rachel

QUESTION 01 | 08
When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?
Rachel — I first knew I enjoyed singing when I was about 7 years old. Music was always all around me growing up as my dad was a primary school music teacher and choir chorister and my mum had also sung in choirs previously before I was born. I was actively singing in my primary school choir right up until year 6. We performed countless concerts each year and I always enjoyed learning all the songs. When I eventually moved up to high school, it was there that I started having individual singing lessons. I started doing ABRSM singing grades and went through to grade 8 which I completed when I was in the lower sixth form. I gained distinction and then decided I wanted to pursue a career with singing and so applied to several music colleges. I was accepted at The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama where my path continued with music. Alongside my singing, I also played the piano (grade 6 standard), the flute and the violin so of course I spent the majority of my time in the music department. I was also awarded a music scholarship which meant I had countless performance opportunities being part of the school choir, chamber choir. Orchestra and flute ensemble
QUESTION 02 | 08
Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?
Rachel — Not really. I enjoy listening to all music but once in while I do like to change radio stations if they keep playing the same songs all the time.
QUESTION 03 | 08
Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.
Rachel — The most difficult course I had to do was my dip ABRSM in vocal teaching principles. I knew that if I wanted to pursue a career as a singing teacher, having grade 8 singing wasn't enough. I wanted a specific qualification that would help me to stand out from others during interviews for jobs. This course was hard because there was only so much material you could prepare as the questions the examiners asked would cover a wide range of topics related to teaching.
QUESTION 04 | 08
What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?
Rachel — The piano because you are using two hands to create two separate sets of chords and notes whilst also reading the music that is in front of you. Then there is also the pedals alongside that. Multitasking is a must for this instrument!
QUESTION 05 | 08
What are your keys to success?
Rachel — Hard work and practise; be dedicated and determined but remain positive and also seek inspiration. You also have to be an individual and stand out from the crowd: don't conform because others tell you to do so!
QUESTION 06 | 08
Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.
Rachel — Gareth Malone - I love his work and how he has made choir music more assessable to the general public. He has changed the image of choir singing making it out to be fun and not just something old people do. I also love his dress sense and his quirky character whilst being interviewed and I think our conversation would mainly consist of sharing vocal warm ups which of course is always a bonus.

The Spice girls - I idolised this band growing up and I loved the message from them that girls/women have the power to do anything they want to do. I reckon we would have a good laugh and a dance and I could show them how much I know all the words to all their songs and the dance moves. I would also ask cheekily would they like a 6th member just so I could buy a pair of outrageous platforms and wear leopard print haha!

Puccini (yes I know he's dead but hey) - his operatic music just hits me right in the heart. It is passionate and beautiful to listen to. If he was alive today I would want to tell him just how much it inspired me to study singing at further education and would ask if he could write my very own aria or even opera specifically for my type of voice. I would probably sing some of his arias to him and ask him what I could do to improve anything…..and maybe perhaps converse in some Italian.
QUESTION 07 | 08
Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.
Rachel — When I was in year 8 at school, we went on a field trip to see the Lion King in London's west end. I had other ideas as I knew Covent Garden Opera House was also in London. I knew a young lady who was currently studying there as a young artist as she had previously come to school to showcase her vocal talent. I made arrangements to meet up with her and split away from my group so she can show me behind the scenes which inspired me and also my singing. Whilst I was enjoying a lovely tour of the opera house from the young lady, teachers on the trip from my school were tearing their hair out trying to find me and shouting at said students in my group for letting me wonder off to the opera house. When they found me it was awkward and I honestly didn't see what the big deal was. However, being a teacher myself now I can see why they had panicked! Needless to say the day ended badly and a telling off just wasn't enough. I had upset all my favourite teachers (minus one who I didn't like anyway) and the consequences were I had to write all of them a letter of apology and endure a detention or two all because I was inspired by a young opera singer's voice and wanted to see what a real opera house looked like. I laugh about it now but at the time I felt quite miserable.
QUESTION 08 | 08
What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?
Rachel — I am confident with my line of work and feel I have good qualifications which set me aside from other singing teachers. I have a lot of knowledge relating to the voice which other teachers don't seem to have. I am kind and welcoming to all my students and I ensure that regardless of age all my students come out of their lessons feeling inspired, confident and positive. I never want my students to ever be afraid to ask me questions during their learning as I enjoy explaining the outcome. I enjoy teaching all genres of music as I believe the technical elements are similar throughout so there are no limits during lessons and students can enjoy singing the songs they like. I've had child protection training and I am aware of how to run my business efficiently and also have public liability insurance. I am a member of the British Voice Association, the association of teachers of singing and also the ISM.
