Each student will first be consulted to ascertain their personal and academic goals, their level of aptitude/study and any personal tutoring preferences they have. I will then draw up a flexible lesson plan for the agreed period of tutoring that takes all of this into account. The structure and content of the lessons can then follow a more rigid predetermined format (which is okayed by the student at every stage) or can be decided upon on a weekly basis so as to fit the student’s immediate tutoring needs. My method of teaching is primarily based upon careful cooperation between tutor and tutee to find the most effective and comfortable arrangement for the student. The lessons will be interactive and as mentioned flexible, they can take the form of more traditional lessons with a lot of dictation or they can be closer to relaxed but involved and structured conversations about the subject matter. The sessions can even be a mixture of a whole variety of approaches should the student find a more holistic approach a better fit.
I am a recent postgraduate student having completed my MA course in early September of this year at Durham University. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature with Creative Writing from the University of Birmingham, and I am currently preparing to begin a PhD in my discipline in the next academic year. I am a committed student myself and understand the pressures of high-level study and the unique demands of an English Literature course. I am interested in offering tutoring at all levels of study, aptitude and comprehension including GCSE, A Level and Undergraduate. My course at Birmingham provided a detailed overview of many areas of literature, my period of study ranged from Plato and the epic poets all the way up to literature from the 20th and 21st century. As a result, I have encountered a wide spectrum of criticism and developed the critical techniques and skills needed to approach texts from a range of periods and forms. My recent experience at Durham has further honed and specialised these skills. I can comfortably provide more general advice on essay writing as well as lessons focussing on the process of critical comprehension and analysis.
