A recent Microbiology undergraduate, I have lived and breathed the biological sciences for 4 years, as well as having worked a year in a research institute, Pirbright. Having done british GCSE/A level biology myself, I am very familiar with the knowledge and exam preparation required for a student's success in Biology. I am very passionate about the subject, and have taken great pleasure in studying it: my aim is to help my students feel enthusiastic about biology as well, and to feel like learning for the gain of knowledge, and not only for passing exams. My tutoring technique will vary from studet to student, and I am flexible to change my methods to suit a student's learning style.
I have tutored Biology to one GCSE level student previosuly; lessons consisted of the student verbally summarising what she had covered in class very briefly. I would then proceed to ask specific questions about the different aspects of the content, which she would first have to answer verbally. This step would highlight any understanding difficulties she had, which we would then go through together. At the end of the lesson, I would give her a few exam-style written questions for home-work; we would go through it in the following lesson.
I have just finished my 4 year Microbiology Bachelors degree at the University of Manchester (final grade not released yet). This course included both written and verbal assesments, which trained me to not only write but speak about a particular topic with confidence. Many verbal assesments required explaining a topic to the audience and making sure that content was clearly communicated. In addition, I have worked in a research institute (The Pirbright Institute) laboratory for a year, carrying out my own research project. I therefore have an understanding of not only the academic side, but the practical handson side of biology as well.
