About the lesson
I like to cover topics students find more challenging by gauging how much they already know. I usually find that students need the most help in gaining confidence in using the methods they have seen in school/college. I am happy to go through example questions but then ask that students lead me through it rather than me giving the answers for a more active learning experience.

About Jamie
I have recently graduated from my masters in Mathematics at the University of Manchester, achieving a first, with other an 80% average
Before attending university I worked as a maths teaching assistant in a secondary school, working with students between the ages of 14 and 18, and from various different sets, including GCSE resit classes in which all students improved their grade, and 90% achieved a grade C (now a 5). I found different approaches to the subjects worked better for different students, and so my tutoring style now is very flexible around the student so we can achieve success together

Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
Jamie is extremely knowledgeable and very good at engaging students to get the best out of them. He is exceptionally good at adapting his lessons to the student's needs to help further their understanding of an area. I would highly recommend him to anyone who is looking for any level of maths tutoring.
Jamie is a dedicated, caring maths teacher, who always strives to encourage and engage with students in his lessons. He encourages them to understand the different concepts, finding different ways to explain topics to help them learn. I have no hesitation in recommending this superb tutor.
I have known Jamie for the last 4 years studying on the same course for a maths degree. Throughout this time, he has helped me on various projects. His explanations are very clear and he takes the time to help you understand.
He helped my younger sister through her GCSEs which were interrupted by the lockdowns and is continuing to assist with her maths A level. She felt much more confident bridging the gap between GCSE and A levels (even with the amount of in school time missed) due to his support. I would definitely recommend him to anyone else who is looking for some extra assistance.I have known Jamie for many years, and he is incredibly patient and hardworking. He is a great orator and I think that he is a very successful tutor!

Find out more about Jamie
01
When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
I have always enjoyed maths, it having come quickly to me as a child. As I got older I realised not everyone was like that and started to help them out in lessons, which progressed into my year of teaching, and starting tutoring during my time at university.
02
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
I teach maths, having experience at GCSE level, A level and functional skills. My favourite topics to teach are the pure maths sections, followed by stats. I always think that these areas can have very quick progression with students! Probably my least favourite topic is mechanics- mainly because I have to work so much harder to understand it!
03
Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
I have had many role models in teaching- particularly the ones that encouraged me to start teaching/tutoring and showed me how to explain ideas in different ways to students to find a way they understand
04
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
I think the qualities needed to be a successful tutor are a strong knowledge of the subject, patience, both in explanation and waiting for the student to process it, and adaptability to be able to change the lesson plan based on how the student is responding to the lesson
05
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.
I remember in GCSEs at school being sat next to a girl that was struggling with the pace of the top set lessons. I helped her in the lessons and with revision and she ended up getting an A*! (And then an A at A level). This was the time that I realised how rewarding seeing someone else do well that I know I had a role in.
06
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?
The difficulties I have in maths have mainly been as the level increased. I have had to try to understand the material thoroughly, rather than just learning methods and being good at passing exams. I think that doing the tutoring now has helped with the understanding, which I can now pass onto my students.
07
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
I don't have a particular passion area. I just enjoy the results of my students, and the pride they feel when they achieve or surpass their goals.

What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?
I am a Superprof because I have a strong knowledge of the subject, I am patient in both delivery and waiting for the students to understand. I also have many resources for questions, or the lessons so I am able to change direction whenever it's needed!
