My teaching method is a casual and fun approach to learning whilst making sure that the students objectives for taking the lessons are being met - technique improvement or feeling comfortable in water.
I try to make sure that students are enjoying themselves whilst learning and teach them not to be afraid of the water.
Lessons can be anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, as any less than that would be too short to learn movements and any more than that would be too tiring.
If starting from scratch my methods are for the first few sessions to get the student to feel comfortable being in the water - head under water, feet off the ground and floating - and then move on basic technique.
If wanting to hone skills, the first session will be used to study current technique and skill set and then make a plan of how to move forward for subsequent sessions.
While throughout high school and university, I competed at county, regional and national (team) competitions.
