A box contains 150 apples, if 27 of them are removed how many are left?

We can either do this with the column method whereby we write 150 on the top and 27 underneath

We have to subtract 27 from 150

Well this is a simple subtraction question and there are different ways of approaching it

We start from right to left, taking 7 away from 0 - we can't take 7 away from nothing so we need to 'borrow' a 1 from the 5 leaving it now as 140 on the top, and then put a 1 by our 0 to make 10

this gives us 2 which we write underneath our 2 and our 4

next we have to take away 2 from our left over 4

we can then take away 7 from 10 which gives us 3 which we write beneath the 0 and the 7

so the answer is 123

now all we have left is the 1 from the 100s column on the far left, seeing as we have nothing in our 100s column beneath it, then we have nothing to take away so we just write a 1 beneath it

then we have to jump from 30 to 100 which gives us +70
chloe

so our first jump is from 27 to 30 which gives us +3

The second method is to go along a number line from 27 to 150 and add up all the numbers along the way
chloe

add them all together 3+70+50 and we get 123 again
chloe
27 September 2011
now we have to jump from 100 to 150 which gives us 50

As Chloe says, there are various ways of tackling this subtraction question. For me, I think a simple way would be to take off 20, then take off 7. Taking off 20 is OK - 10 off makes it 140, then another 10 off makes it 130. Then you've got another 7 to take off. At this stage you could use fingers if that helps you! Just count downwards, 149, 148 etc, until you've taken off 7. Or another helpful way at this stage might be to break down the 7 into a 5 and a 2. It's not too bad taking 5 off 130. That take you to 125. Then taking off another 2 you can probably do in your head, and it takes you to ......... 123.
