For the city park commission, you are designing a marble planter in which to plant flowers. you want the length of the planter to be six times the height and the width to be three times the height. the sides should be one foot thick. Since the planter will be on the sidewalk, it does not need a bottom. What should the outer dimension of the planter be if it is to hold 4 cubic feet of dirt?

It will help you if you draw a diagram here, and label it with the dimensions you are given. Let the height be "h" (feet). So the length is 6h and the width 3h. The walls are 1ft thick. What are the dimensions of the block of earth inside the planter? The length for example must be 6h-2. The three dimensions multiplied together must be equal to 4. This will give you an equation that you can solve to find h. The only tricky thing about it is that it involves h cubed. Good luck and let us know how you get on.
