A measure of spread informs us on much a data sample is spread out / scattered. The range and the interquartile range (IQR) can be used to measure the spread of a sample.

Measures of spread along with measures of location (or central tendency) can be used for identifying key features of a sample, allowing us to better understand the population from which the sample comes from.

So, looking at the data in the question. The lowest value is 4. The highest value is 63. The range is the highest less the lowest value, so that's 63-4 = 59
