Hi Libby

05 March 2013

Hi Libby, your question simply means you have to divide five and one third by two and two thirds. In order to do this, first you have to change each mixed number into fraction form (top heavy or vulgar fraction). As there are five thirds in one whole, you have 15 thirds from number five plus add the one third in the question which will give you 16/3. Do the same with the 3 and 2/3 so you now have 11/3 from that part. The rule for dividing fractions is to change the divide sign inbetween the two numbers into multiply and turn the last fraction upside down. So you have 16/3 x 3/11. Check if you can cancel, if so do, if not multiply across the two numbers at the top and multiply across the two numbers at the bottom. If your answer is "top heavy " i.e. the top is bigger than the bottom part of the fraction, then divide the bottom number into the top in order to change your answer into a mixed number and so you get your answer! Kind regards keithteacher

any division of fractions has to be converted into multiplication of fractions. it is easier done with proper fractions. however when mixed numbers are involved they need to be converted into improper fractions first followed by changing the division to multiplication of fractions then simplications as far as possible for the final answer. in the above convert 5 1/3 to 16/3( 5 multiply by denominator add 3). follow the same procedure for 3 2/3. you will have two improper fractions with the division sign in the middle. change the division sign to a multiplication and then flip over the improper fraction from 3 2/3. simplify then on.

It is not clear what your question is. After reading all the different answers, I felt confused too.Is the question"What is Five and one third divided by Three and two thirds?"

15 January 2014

If the question is:(5*(1/3)) / (3*(2/3))You can take on the question in two parts. The first part involves multiplying the fraction 1/3 by 5, which is equal to 5/3. The second part can be done in a similar way to give 6/3, which is also equal to 2.=(5/3) / (6/3)= (5/3) / 2= 5/6If the question is:5 + (1/3) / 3 + (2/3)In order to do this with any numbers given, it is best to convert the whole numbers to common fractions. Therefore:5 = 15/3 and 3 = 9/3We can now add the fractions on each side of the division:(15/3 + 1/3) / (9/3 + 2/3)= (16/3) / (11/3)Since the denominators are now the same, they can be discarded, leaving the answer.=16/11I hope this helps!

Hi, the answer is 5*1/3/3+2/3=5/9+6/9=14/9

27 January 2014

First change your mixed number to an improper fraction5 1/3 = 15/3 + 1/3 = 16/33 2/3 = 9/3 + 2/3 = 11/3When you divide one fraction by another, flip one of them over and then multiply......like this16/3 / 11/3 = 16/3 x 3/11The 3s cancel which leaves 16/11 and if you want this as a mixed number this is 1 5/11Hope this helps :)
