to answer this question, you should multiply the contents of the brackets together, so ... x^2 + 6x + 2x + 12 which can be simplified to x^2 + 8x + 12

Another good way is to take each elemnent out of the first bracket and multiply it in turn by all in the second bracket. That sounds a little complicated but if you look at what it means you will see the elements of the first bracket in front of what remains in the other bracket...

x(x + 2) +6(x + 2) now simply expand the brackets and simplify...

The grid method can be used to expand and simplify brackets. Also try FOIL, "crab's claw" and "smiley face". Don't panic if you haven't heard of those last two methods.
