why do we need to respire

why do we need to respire

Answers
Here is an answer taken from wikipedia. there are two parts: oxygen and carbon dioxide.. the former is an absolute necessity to perform the "oxidation" reactions within the body, most importantly energy production and the formation of ATP sufficient to power breathing, your heart, etc. etc. BUT the converse is that throughout all these processes, CO2 builds up and acts as a toxin if not taken care of.. hence you "breathe" it out. C02 has a low affinity for your hemoglobin, so increasing amounts of C02 in your blood (thats not taken care of..) snatches up your hemoglobin and decreases the amount of oxygen capable of being shuttled to your distal cells.. hence you'd suffocate if excess C02 is not eliminated. Moreover, C02 can combine with H20 form an acidic compound (carbonic acid) that causes cardiovascular stress.. you're heart rate goes up, blood pressure increases to max. "exhalation" of this compound. Respiration simply refers to the net effect of inhalation and exhalation

All organisms respire. The product formed by the process respiration is energy. Energy is needed for all organisms.

Breathing and respiring are very different things. Breathing brings in oxygen which we need but we also need energy. Respiring brings in energy for the body
