About the lesson
I am a talented qualified teacher committed to helping Primary pupils unlock a lifelong love for Reading, Writing and Maths. Evidenced by solid results, I teach the Primary Curriculum with strategy and zeal and create the conditions for progress!
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
The high-quality teaching of Creative Writing, Reading Comprehension and Maths has been a priority to me for a long time now. I have inclusively taught the Primary Curriculum in a 'Good' Hackney Primary school every day for the last four years. I have worked with hundreds of Primary aged pupils to develop the strategies, resources and philosophy required to make the difference.
Aligned with 'Bond' Assessment Papers, I also tutor privately for the 11+ exam and carefully ensure that the appropriate coverage is always made. Informed by research, I provide solid and comprehensive preparation for a range of common entrance exams. I find out what will be in the exam and make the very most of our available time.
Following three consecutive years of teaching Year 6 in a 'Good' Hackney Primary School - I have acquired the experience, knowledge, skills and resources to expertly tutor towards and for the KS2 (7-11 years) SATS:
☆ Creative Writing ☆ Years 3-6 / 11+ Standard
I immerse children in new vocabulary and explicitly teach Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation (S.P.A.G) through the main key genres:
Non-Fiction → Non-chronological reports | Persuasive Texts | Balanced Arguments | Newspaper Reports | Information Texts | Explanation Writing | Recounts | Formal Letter Writing.
Fiction → Adventure Stories | Mystery Stories | Fables | Myths and Legends | Play-scripts | Stories set in imaginary worlds | Stories in the style of a significant author. Children write with fronted adverbials and a range of conjunctions to develop a strong, sophisticated and reliable style.
☆ Reading Comprehension ☆ (Years 3-6 / 11+ Standard) Through the shared reading of appropriately pitched classic children's texts I explicitly teach the following Reading Strategies to deepen understanding:
Inference | Clarification | Prediction | Summarising | Asking questions | Making Connections | Retrieving Information | Building Evidence | Exam Strategy (Reading Paper) Children apply emerging reading strategies to appropriately pitched practice test papers.
☆ Maths ☆ (Years 3-6 / 11+ Standard) I visually teach the relationship between Fractions, Decimals and Percentages to give children the versatility to excel at Year 6 Sats and 11+ Exams. Children apply their developing problem-solving strategies to appropriately pitched practice test papers.
☆ 11+ Exam ☆ I correlate the Reading Comprehension, Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning requirements of 11+ Common Entrance exams with 'Bond' test papers and teach advanced Creative Writing skills across a wide range of genres through shared writing:
→ Planning for Impact: How to stir the reader with purposeful paragraphs
→ Grammar: Varying sentence structure for dramatic effect
→ Advanced Punctuation: Inverted commas, colons, semi-colons, brackets, ellipsis (parenthesis)
→ Vocabulary: Using richer synonyms for dramatic effect
→ Style: How to write with inferred meaning using 'Show not Tell' tips
I creatively unpick the KS2 Sats and 11+ plus exam content in a way that is fun, rigorous and memorable. I deliver the curriculum in a way that is dynamic, meaningful and visibly developing of confidence. I strategically guide my pupils through an individualised program of study to ensure that they make the required coverage, particularly for common entry exams.
I target your child's weakest areas in a way that makes them feel supported, equipped, confident and prepared. I am committed to ensuring that all of my tuition sessions have an impact. My lessons are always well prepared, well resourced and responsive to the needs of the pupil in line with National Curriculum, Year 6 SATS or 11+ common entrance exam objectives.
Children receive a Literacy and a Numeracy book so parents can track and support their progress. Briefly after each session, I like to explain what your child has been learning about and involve you in the process of setting of a strategic piece of homework to develop particular skills.

Sasha (11) has dyslexia and is preparing for her 11+ exam. Matilda (11) is a Gifted & Talented Year 6 writer who has just completed her Sats. James (6) is working on his KS1 Maths skills and his spelling. Rex (9) has asbergus and needs help with his basic reading and writing. Shazia (11) is preparing for her 11+ exam. James (11) is preparing for his KS2 Sats, and needs particular help with writing.
I ensure that each session covers the content of the child's prospective exam. Pupils make the appropriate coverage without 'wizzing past' important concepts that require revision and consolidation.
My daughter was taught by Mr Merriman in her last year of primary school. It was a very important year for all the children in year 6.
Mr Merriman was fantastic and I really can't praise him enough!
He worked closely with the children and was always so helpful, approachable and someone with a heart of gold who always wanted to help.
He tutored my daughter for the SATS exams and his teaching, his interaction with the children, his feedback and the work he set made all the difference in the SATS
My 8yr old son was taught by Mr Merriman before we relocated out of Hackney. I cannot recommend him highly enough. As not only my son but I know the whole class really connected with him. Mr Merriman has a great rapport with the kids.
We found him to be a funny, positive, good hearted, male role model. Great teacher/ communicator. My son progressed in math a weaker subject for him with Mr Merrimans tuition. Having three boys it's fantastic to find a male teacher who connects so well.
I have worked with Rhys Merriman for the past four years in a north London primary school. As a teaching assistant for 12+ years I have worked with many different teachers, good and not so good. I can honestly say Rhys is a brilliant teacher with a great passion for what he does. His commitment to providing children with a first class education is amazing. His ability to relate to children and get the best from them is what makes him the outstanding teacher he is.
Rhys is a committed educator who is passionate about enabling children to become independent learners. Isn't that what we all want for our children?
