Richard - Biggleswade - Cello

Methodology

I am a professional cellist with over 20 years experience both as a performer and teacher. I have a very open approach to teaching.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

Cello, music theory, aural tests.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I am a Graduate and Post-Graduate of The Royal Northern College of Music.

- How much do you charge?

I give an initial free 30 minute consultation lesson to serious enquirers. Lessons are then £18 for 30 minutes or £35 for an hour.

- Where do you teach?

I teach from my studio at home in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. Situated very close to the A1 north of Stevenage.

- When are you available?

I am available by appointment any week day from 5pm and weekends from 4pm. Lesson times are available during normal working hours, again my appointment.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

Adult beginners and all ages are welcome. ABRSM Grades 1 - 8 and Diploma exams followed.

I am a professional cellist with over 30 years experience as a performer, teacher and mentor. I am based near Ely in Cambridgeshire. I am passionate about teaching and thrive on the successes of my students.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach cello to students of all abilities and backgrounds.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have both a Post Graduate and Graduate Diploma in Advanced Performance from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.

- How much do you charge?

I charge £35 per hour. But I tend to discuss this during initial contact as the length of a lesson depends entirely on the standard and age of the student. For new students I like to offer a free consultation lesson, at which we can discuss aims, goals etc.

- Where do you teach?

Currently I teach at Berkshire Maestros Music School and Dartford Music School ( The Mick Jagger Centre ) as a cello specialist, as well as my own private practice in Ely.

- When are you available?

I teach at a mutually agreed time, mainly evenings and weekends.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach all ages and abilities, so please do get in touch to discuss how I can help. I enjoy teaching adults and very happy to guide adult beginners and tailor lessons to suit.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I teach the ABRSM syllabus. However, I appreciate that not all students want or are interested in taking formal exams, so I am very happy to help those who just enjoy playing and seek improvement. I have many years of experience of entering students for ABRSM exams, with an excellent success rate.

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

Whilst at the RNCM I studied with eminent cellists Marius May, Antonio Lysy and Eduardo Vassallo, taking masterclasses with Steven Iserliss, Bruno Shrecker, The Allegri String Quartet, The Alberni Quartet, Nash Ensemble etc. I have over 20 years experience as a performer and teacher. As a performer I have worked with many of the UK leading orchestras and have extensive West End experience where I was the solo cellist on Les Miserables for some 11 years. I was a member of the Banks Piano Trio and Amici Quartet and went on to perform with The Shirley Thompson Ensemble. I have made many TV and Radio appearances and have performed premieres of cello works by popular composers on The South Bank. More recently I have acted as Associate Conductor on the West End production of Les Miserables and currently Musical Director of The Showbiz Pops Orchestra.
I have extensive teaching experience born out of many years within the State, Private and Specialist Music School systems and have undertaken the ABRSM Examiner training.

During my final year at the Royal Northern College of Music, I was asked to contribute to the formation of its String Teachers Course.
