Hi, my name is Richard, and I am a full time professional online maths tutor. I am a qualified teacher with over 10 years tutoring and teaching experience. I have been a full time tutor for 4 years after a successful time teaching in British Schools
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Mathematics exclusively.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I hold a PGCE in both Mathematics and Music, and a degree from York University. I completed my teaching training at Leeds University. I have spent over 8 years teaching in schools (teaching mathematics up to A Level) so I know how the education system in the UK operates. I have also held management positions within these schools.
- How much do you charge?
I charge a flat rate of £50 per hour.
- Where do you teach?
As I tutor online I can teach from anywhere. Usually this is from my home, but if I have to travel, I will take my laptop and iPad with me so lessons can continue! Online tuition really does give us flexibility.
- When are you available?
As this is my full time job I am available during normal business hours. I also tutor weekends.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I tutor across the whole age range, from KS1 to Adults. I find tutoring all ages rewarding and many students who have started with me early on in their school careers stay with me all the way to GCSE or A Level. I will quite happily teach anyone who wants to learn!
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I prepare for all the major mathematics qualifications in the UK.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I tutor online using an interactive whiteboard called bitpaper (I love it) and it's free. All I do is send you an URL and when you click it on it, the whiteboard will appear, ready for our lesson. We use this in combination with video call software so we can both see and hear each other. My personal preference is FaceTime, but I can happily use Skype, Zoom, WebEx and others such as WhatsApp, Messenger Video and Snapchat.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Maths is something that everyone can do, it just needs to be pitched at the right level for things to start clicking into place. One of my strengths (that I developed during my professional training) is the ability to question. I will use a range of questioning techniques to hep students discover the answer themselves.
A confident learner is a successful learner and in maths I think that confidence is crucial. I will help build up my tutee's confidence so that they will feel able to answer questions with ease! I will encourage, not humiliate, and I will ensure that topics are pitched perfectly so pupils can make progress straight away. Exam rubric (what the exam boards want to see and how they want to see it) will feature heavily and we will work together so weaknesses will be consolidated over time.
As I have had lots of experience teaching in schools, this gives me a unique insight into how teachers think, and what they would like to see from their pupils who are engaged in private tuition.
I aim to help pupils over the long term by also discussing revision strategies and memory aids to ensure that topics covered in sessions will remain fresh and exam ready.
Teaching is a two way process so expect questions – lots of them! If any stumbling blocks have been encountered I will use a range of questioning techniques to get to the bottom of the problem. One of the key benefits of private tuition is having the opportunity to assess a tutee's knowledge and remedy where appropriate.
I use a range of resources, from Numecon (plastic slates that are great to visualise number) to old school A level text books, from weighing scales to tennis balls. I will use whatever is needed to get a point across!
I have been told I make learning fun and I am inclined to agree as I think I am hilarious!
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have taught mathematics and music in secondary schools for the past eight years, and I have been professionally tutoring full time for the past four. I left teaching on a high, having been a member of a mathematics department belonging to an outstanding secondary school in Leeds. I am now a professional online tutor. I am also an examiner for Edexcel (which means marking real life exam scripts during the summer). This gives me a unique insight into the examination process, and in turn, this means your child has a greater awareness of what they need to do to successfully pass their exams.
I tutor KS2 KS3, 11+ Maths, 13+ Maths, GCSE, iGCSE, A Level, Functional Skills in Maths and ICT and the Further Maths Qualifications from OCR and AQA. I have also tutored Foundation Engineering Students and helped prepare others for distance learning exams. I am also proud of my work tutoring maths elements of Level 3 City and Guilds Engineering Apprentices. It is great applying the theory to real life engineering applications.
I have been tutoring privately since I started teaching. I have had excellent feedback from parents and students.
In terms of school based teaching my GCSE and A Level results have been excellent, and I have been consistently rated as outstanding during formal and informal observations.
In previous schools I was head of KS3 mathematics and head of functional mathematics. This involved visiting primary schools and designing practical learning experiences. I have been responsible for designing Schemes of Work (ie what to teach and when to teach it), managed a school initiative that involved teaching parents in conjunction with students, and monitored pupil progress to ensure that those who were not performing their best pulled their socks up! I have also helped other teachers develop their careers. I have been a mentor to Trainee teachers and Newly Qualified Teachers. This involved watching their lessons and giving them feedback on how to improve their teaching.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes - I subscribe to the update service.
- Where and with whom did you train?
My teaching training took place across two Universities, Leeds and York St. John.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a member of the ATL and I help run the tutors network, Maths Tutors UK. I also organise tutor meetups in the North of England
- Tell me about some of your current students.
Here is some info about a selection of the students that I am tutoring at the moment. I am tutoring a homeschooled student IGCSE Higher mathematics and I also have 7 students that are taking GCSE Higher exams in the summer of 2018 (my work as an Edexcel Examiner is critical here). 5 of these are choosing mathematics at A level so I will be carrying on tuition with these to help them during their A Level studies.
I have 3 students in KS3 who I am providing mathematical mentorship for having started teaching them whilst in KS2. Another rewarding part of my work is that I am also tutoring Level 1 functional skills maths to an adult who is retraining to be a fabricator/welder. I am also currently preparing a student for the maths element of the 13+ Common Entrance Exam.

Richard has been an amazing maths tutor for my son, who was really struggling with GCSE maths and the school had lost all hope for him. Richard showed faith and confidence in him when all around him were giving up on him. He always sent him extra stuff via the email and as a result my son passed his GCSE this year. I cannot recommend him enough, as he is genuinely amazing and hard working person.
Rich is an amazing tutor. He is able to communicate clearly whilst making the subject interesting. Rich's positive friendly attitude have made maths interesting again for my teenage son.
It is so good to have a teacher who is inspirational and his enthusiasm for both maths and music is contagious. We couldn't recommend Rich highly enough.
My son feels like one lesson with Richard is the equivalent to 10 lessons at school and he really enjoys the session. Richard takes the complication out of maths and seems to explain it in a way my son can understand. Would highly recommend Richard as a tutor, I only wish Id taken the plunge earlier.
