I am a professional Trombonist with 7 years of experience teaching brass privately, in schools and for Hounslow Music Trust. My lessons aim to inspire and motivate students to reach their full potential in a relaxed environment.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
Trombone (Tenor and Bass)
Euphonium / Baritone
Trumpet / Cornet
I teach beginners to post-grade 8.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a Master of Music (distinction) degree from the Royal College of Music, in which I specialised in Trombone Performance. I researched, both different composer's approaches to writing for the orchestral trombone, and how orchestral playing has developed throughout the 20th Century. I also took a particular interest in pushing the boundaries of the Trombone repertoire. You can hear an example of this in My Files - Curio for Trombone, Quadraphonic tape and Live Electronics. This piece is a collaboration between myself and composer Cameron Graham.
In 2013 I received a First Class Bachelor of Music Honours degree in Trombone and Euphonium performance. This qualification gave me a strong musical grounding with studies in: History of Music, Harmony and Counterpoint, Teaching techniques, Orchestral performance and Chamber Music. I also took great interest in the Alexander Technique.
Before attending music college I gained two performance diplomas from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, on Trombone and Euphonium.

- Where do you teach?
I am based in Muswell Hill but generally travel to student's houses for lessons. I cover the following boroughs: Central London, Haringey, Barnet, Enfield, Camden, Islington, Hackney, Waltham Forest, Greenwich and Bexley.
Other areas are possible but may incur an additional charge so please do enquire.
- When are you available?
I am completely flexible and happy to organise a time that suits us both.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
My specialism is Trombone and Euphonium. However, my skills and knowledge of these two instruments are transferable across all brass instruments. I currently teach all brass instruments to a variety of ages (7 - 70) from beginner to post-grade 8 standard.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
Grade exams are, in my opinion, not the sole reason to learn an instrument! It is exciting to gain recognition of your progress, but I aim to provide a balanced course of teaching that will produce a well-rounded musician. I have experience of preparing students for both Trinity Guildhall and ABRSM graded exams and ABRSM Diplomas.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I can tutor online through Skype or FaceTime. However, unless this is your only option I would suggest that face-to-face lessons would be more beneficial.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Music is a fantastic activity to pursue. Whether it is as a hobby or something that may become your profession, it is a brilliant source of enjoyment for so many people. My lessons aim to realise this enjoyment factor whilst providing motivation and detailed instruction in order to help you achieve your potential.
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have worked for Hounslow Music Trust since 2010, where I have taught all of their advanced Trombone and Tuba students. I have been teaching privately for the last 6 years, with students completing a variety of grade exams on Trombone, Euphonium and Trumpet. Since 2016 I have tutored the Trombone at Brentwood School. This is an independent secondary school, in which I teach students across all standards and help them to prepare for their school commitments. I began teaching lower brass at Queen Elizabeth School in Barnet this year. I teach the Trombone, French Horn and Baritone on a one-to-one basis.
I have performed throughout Europe with a variety of Orchestras and Ensembles. These have included performances live on radio in England, Portugal, France and Italy as well as TV performances in England including the BBC Proms and Sports Personality of the Year. Venues include, the Musikverein Vienna, Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Grosses Festspielhaus Salzburg, Royal Albert Hall London, Royal Festival Hall London and many more.
Over the last few years I have performed with the Philharmonia Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, English National Opera Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester amongst others. You can also hear me on the soundtrack of Avengers Age of Ultron and on Fable Legends video game.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have an up to date DBS.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I studied for both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at the Royal College of Music, London. Whilst there, I received tutelage on Trombone from Byron Fulcher (Philharmonia Orchestra), Graham Lee (Ex-Royal Philharmonic Orchestra), Lindsay Shilling (Royal Opera House). My teachers on Euphonium were James Maynard (London Symphony Orchestra) and Steven Mead.
From 2012 - 2014 I was Principal Trombone of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, where I have had coaching from Denis Wick (ex-LSO), Ian Bousfield (ex-Vienna Philharmonic) and Chris Houlding (ex-Opera North). The Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester is Europe's greatest youth orchestra. I have also taken the London Sinfonietta Academy course in contemporary music, here I had coaching from David Purser.

I cannot recommend Rory enough. At 64 I thought the chance of me ever learning an instrument had gone. With his musical knowledge and skill with the instrument, I am learning the trombone. The unique way he teaches helped me overcome what I thought was an impossible task. His friendly manner has never faltered regardless of how many times he repeats an instruction. This is a wonderful experience and I wish I found Rory sooner. I don't think you could find a better person to help you play an instrument.
Rory is a superb and inspiring teacher. He brings a wealth of playing and teaching experience, of a range of brass instruments, to my trumpet lessons. His supportive and flexible approach means I really enjoy my lessons and have been able to make rapid progress. With his help I'm preparing for Grade 4 in addition to now having the confidence to play with other musicians for pleasure. I feel lucky to have Rory teach me and highly recommend him to anyone wishing to start or continue their musical journey.
